I cleaned this old single shot up. I took the bolt apart and cleaned all the crud out and it seems to work real nice!
The problem I have is: If I load a shell and close the bolt and re-open the bolt, it does not matter how slow or fast I do this...the shell will extract every time. When I get out to the field and fire it, the spent shell will not come out. I have to dig and dig to get it out. Its almost like the shell has expanded enough that the extractor will not pull it out. When I say "dig it out" I mean " work at it like crazy with my truck keys or what ever I have on hand and it takes quite a few minutes to get it out". Next time I try it, I`m taking my cleaning rod with me and work at it from the other end.
One other thing I noticed also. When I install my cleaning rod from the crown. I get it in till there is maybe 5-6 inches before the action and it gets snug. Is this common? I never ever noticed that before in any gun I own. Thanks,Darcy

Here is a pic off of Google. This is my extractor:

Check the face of the barrel for signs of the firing pin striking. If it has, metal might be displaced and creating a burr.

I cleaned this gun right up. There was no more crud to be found. I used a fine round file and touched up the outer edge of the barrel face incase there was any burrs(couldn`t see anything with the eye). It still does this, I had to literally use force with my cleaning rod to get the spent shell out.
When I got home, out came the calipers. Now this makes absolutely no sense. I had four old spent cases fired from who knows which 22.
Two were CCI Stingers: 5.79mm
Two were super x`s : 5.75mm

Just now I fired three Super X`s with this gun. The spent shells measured: 5.73mm. An unfired Super X measures 5.65
I just measured the barrel face and I get: 5.95mm

I had watched a "youtube" video of a guy shooting one of these 67`s. He had mentioned that he had issues with Long Rifle shells, compared to shorts.
This gun does date back before 1945. Maybe the LR`s are too much pressure making the case bulge???? But then again, my barrel measures 5.95mm. There should be lots of room for the spent shell to slide right out. There is a 0.22 difference

Thats what I thought about was the expansion, but the bore is 5.95mm and a spent 22LR is 5.73mm. There should be .22mm of room left, but the spent shell seems stuck in the bore. I`ll have to check the other bores of my 22`s and see what they are.

I was going to suggest that maybe the extractor is worn enough that it isn't grabbing the shell well enough to remove a fired shell that has expanded some. But if you have to dig like crazy to get it out I don't know.

Maybe it has been shot out using shorts and now long rifle cases are expanding too much at the bullet end. Had this problem with a couple old rimfires.

What he said. I have an od .22 that my dad gave me, and it has the same problem. He and I shot only shorts in it. The gun was made in 1920ish and the chamber is burnt out making long and long rifle stick. It is still very accurtate with shorts.

577/450 Gets the prize!!!!! Continued use of shorts scars the chamber where bullet and casing meet. Then use of longer ammo expands into this (grove) and makes extraction difficult. Respectfully Jim

Ok...I get the point. Soooo, "looking down at the ground kickin dirt".....where does a guy find shorts now a days? And don`t say the clothing store either lol. I`d like to try maybe 4 or 5 and see.

Not sure where you are in the province, but home hardware in yorkton has them. I have a few boxes kicking around too. Thought I may have seen some at CT on prince of wales drive in regina.

I have been working at it all day. I bought some of this "Wipe-out" maximum strength to clean the barrel. The stupid copper bore brush I bought came apart. What a fother mucker to get that out of the bore I tell you!!! I tried 3 different shells: CCI Stingers, Federal 525 bulk pack, and Winchester Super X`s. They all still stuck in the bore, but after shot...they are out maybe 1/8 inch.
Here are the measurements, remember bore measures 5.95mm.
-CCI`s: top 5.79m
bottom 6.10mm

-Federal`s: top 5.77mm
bottom 5.98mm

-Super X`s: top 5.78mm
bottom 6.18mm

They were all bulged just above the rim, but the Federals were only 3mm bigger than the bore itself. Still stuck though, but only by abit.

What is your guy`s thoughts on shells bulging like this? I still want to find a better bore brush and scrub the inside, was told maybe it is fouled real bad.

What causes this? What are the fixes on an old 22??

The cause would be a Mismatched bolt or the barrel has moved forward.

You need to make sure the case is seated all the way to the rim with the bolt closed. If it's to tight the bolt will be hard to close (if you can), If it's loose the case will expand right before the rim and possibly rupture.

Either the barrel needs to be set back or the bolt face needs some work.

Maybe it has been shot out using shorts and now long rifle cases are expanding too much at the bullet end. Had this problem with a couple old rimfires.
Yes you are correct! This morning I ran down to the local CT and bought some CCI 22 short (710fps) and the eject nice. They also bulge at the rim, but not enough to fill the bore.
Is this something I can fix or is it gunsmith material or is this barrel no good for LR???
