M305 newb, just picked up some M14 mags (they were labeled as M14 mags) for my brand new M305 and was surprised by how badly they fit into the mag well (way too tight) and once I actually manage to get one in there the mag lip appears to block the bolt from stripping a round and going into battery.

Did I get the wrong mags or is there a workaround like bending the lip or something?

Also, can someone recommend mags that will work?

Thanks,

Happy

I have a m1a Springfield. I have a pair of 20/5 mags that are complete crap. They mis-feed & jam. The coating is like a Matt black, different from reciever. I now have Checkmate mags that work perfect. Correct finish and operation, USA made.

I own both a Springfield Armory and a Norinco.
All mags work well in both rifles.
I purchased 3 Korean KCI mags from 3 different suppliers and all 3 fit poorly and caused jams.
I measured them against a drawing I found online and they were all out of spec so they were returned.

have the same problem with 2 mags i picked up brand new. not sure of the make but exactly the same problems. is there anyway to make the mags fit without having to modify the magwell?

Labeled how? Milsurp mags have no stamp that says M-14. Your's are likely civilian aftermarket mags. A lot of those aren't made to the correct size. However, assuming the mag body fits in the rifle, a bent lip can be fixed with long, fine, needle nosed pliers by tweaking the lips in or out. Sounds like 'in' for yours. Only a wee bit at a time. It doesn't take much to make 'em work or have 'em not work.
If the mag just doesn't fit in the rifle, send 'em or take 'em back where you got 'em. They're NFG.
You may want to consider finding some stripper clips too. Lets you load without taking the mag out at all. They're cheap and reasonably easy to find at gun shows.

Have a close look at where the mag's tab interacts with your mag release. See it? Good. Now grab a stone and start slowly removing material on the mag itself until your mag release has enough clearance to easily drop the mag. The issue could also be the top of your mag release, which Norinco has sometimes produced as oversized, leading to tough mag inserts/removal. Without having other mags to try out, it's best not to modify your rifle at all, file one mag a bit and see if it helps.

not even. I bought extra Norc mags from Marstar and they work great too.

I hear the KCI mags suck though

Avoid KCI mags.

My experience with them has been bad bad bad. Took a bunch of Dremel work to simply get the things to seat. Followers are tippy.

I don't know how well they will actually work in the end. My Norc mags don't have these issues.

thanks for the input. I can see where the mag is rubbing on the sides of the magwell. I think i will try sanding the mag a bit and will definately check out the feed lips. The bolt is really hard to pull back when the mag is seated.

Even Nutinfancy says nork mags are just as good as military contract mags aka check mate industry so if you can get Chinese mags get them I almost bought some kci mags the other day but didn't like the way they nuderd the mags and the followers were defiantly not anti tilt they would probably work with a little work but the way they restricted the capacity makes them hard to work on

My Norc mags press against the sides of the mag well too, and are all scuffed there. That may not be the issue. (if it is, squeezing the sides of the mag gently in a vice clamp may help)

Try gradually filing down the BOTTOM of the mag release tab on the top back of the mag.

Also, do you have the same problems with mag empty vs full?

Check your dimensions against the drawings in the link below.
I'll bet the mags are 0.030" to wide at the top.

I couldn't find dimensions or understand those drawings but I did some googling and according to a forum posting (http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184920) the width should be 1.012". As per se then the bad mags exceed that dimension and the good ones are narrower.

I'm including pictures of the good and the bad mag dimensions as well as the lip for reference. I measure both the good and bad mags near the front and back of the mags as well.

Good mag front measurement.

Good mag back measurement.

good-lip.jpg

Good mag, the lip contours the cartridge nicely.

bad-front.jpg

BAD mag front measurement.

bad-back.jpg

BAD mag back measurement.

bad-lip.jpg

BAD mag, the lip contours the cartridge NOT so nicely.
