Hi --

So I need some feedback from those that know more than me. I have a nice Russian (Tula -- 1950, laminated stock) SKS.

My goal is to be able to target shoot out to 150 yds, and possibly hunt at the same range. My eyes are not up to doing this with iron sights, so I want to mount a scope. After studying the sticky and other sources, I am considering the following:

1) Choate or Weaver Converta mount

2) Nikon 2x7 Prostaff Shotgun scope

Am I going to have a problem with ejected cases hitting the scope? If so, do the "case deflectors" that are available for the SKS work?

Any other suggestions for a low cost yet decent scope, particularly one that is shorter than the Nikon (11")?

Thanks in advance for all input.

This is what I did to an SKS that I've since sold:

I used a Choate mount (the receiver cover mounts don't hold zero) and an NCStar 4x scope. I did use a shell deflector that sits on the rear sight. It worked OK on my '52 Tula, but I wouldn't trust it over 150 yds.

Took 2 deer with that combo, both at about 100 yds.

go with the choate mount, solid and lets you use the irons if you want. as far as a scope goes, there's a few options out there that are under 8" long with decent enough eye relief to still be useful.
if you go with the deflector which i've seen but not used, they work, kick the spent round out and down to the right, then you could go with a longer scope. there's also a "mod" you can do so that you don't need the deflector. it's really easy to do and it works like a charm. i've done it to both of mine and it took about 20 minutes total each. there's a sticky on it and i'm sure you can find it under sks optics. i bought some gun blue at ct for 5 bucks to cover the "work" and you would never know it. if you do the "mod" then you can use a full size scope as well. 150yds will be visible, but close groups might be a challenge.......it is afterall still just an SKS. get lots of ammo and enjoy.
cheers

X2! I put a Choate mount on a Chinese SKS and did the ejector port mod with the same results. I wish you could do a similar mod to a CZ 858!

This is great input -- The mod looks simple and easy to do. I will go with the Choate mount and a regular scope, and the mod. I'll post some pics when I am done.

Thanks all.

I'm about to do it on my Chinese SKS, just wanted to get some input.. I know that if you decrease the angle in the back corner of the ejector port, it will eject to the side or maybe even to the front.. Is there a factor that determines which way it will eject, so let's say, closer to 90 more to the front, or something like that?
