I'll be buying a new rifle for my wife in the near future. She's had her eye on on the Ruger Hawkeye compact laminate stainless in 7mm-08 for a while now. I'm kicking myself that I didn't get it for her five months ago when it would have been cheaper, but finances didn't quite permit then - argh.

We've stuck to Leupolds from the start on our centerfires. The VX-1 line so far has proven to be good optics and reliability for the money, and the one time we needed service it was handled very, very well.

Problem is they don't seem to have a silver one in 2-7 power until you get up to the 2.5-8x36 VX-III. This will be her main hunting rig, so the price may be justifiable.

I don't have anything against other brands - just Leupolds have served us well. There is a 3200 2-6x32 listed on the Bushnell website. From looking at other 3200 scopes in shops I've figured that the 3200 is about equivalent to the VX1 line in price and quality but (a) I'm not an experienced judge of optics and (b) I have not had a chance to look through one under low light conditions. This scope doesn't seem to be stocked by any of the big Canadian retailers, but Camera Land stocks them and I'd be happy to support a CGN sponsor.

So:
1) What can you tell me to expect from 3200 series scopes?
2) Is there another Canadian source for the silver B3200 2-6x32?
3) Is there a Leupold option that I've overlooked?
4) Has anybody ordered from Camera Land? - I gather they are US based - I don't suppose that they currently get into problems exporting hunting scopes to Canada?
4) Other brands and scopes to consider.

Thanks,

RG

I have a 3200, but just purchased a Burris FF II off a CGN member, and find it a bit clearer. Check out some Burris, they are in the same price range and they have a 2x7x35mm. Vortex diamondback is another one in that price range with a 2x7x35mm, and many people say its a great scope for the money.

As for getting scopes from the US, I believe you need an export permit.

Thanks HeavyBullet, but these don't seem to be listed in silver on their websites, perhaps I missed it though. She doesn't want to put a black scope of such a pretty silver gun.

One other option we came across is the VX-1 ML/SG 2-7x33. It comes in silver but with a heavy duplex reticle that she doesn't particularly like. This is modifiable to a fine duplex reticle in their online 'custom shop' section for $35. Does anybody know about getting Leupold custom shop scopes in Canada?

Does the scope have to be silver? I think a matte black scope looks good on a stainless rifle myself. It might give you a few more options.

Scott,

We looked up pictures on google image by searching 'stainless rifle'. Matte black scopes look good on stainless rifles with black synthetic stocks, but the gun we're looking at has a gray laminate stock, and pictures of that didn't appeal so much.

Have yo looked at Nikons? I have a couple of buckmasters and the optic are very clear. Lifetime warranty and easier on the pocketbook than leopold. My brother has burris & leopold and says my nikons are clearer.
cheers

The difference between 2 power and 2.5 power is negligible. As you said, it's her main go to rifle, so pony up the cash. I'm sure it will work out for her.

Since no one has stated it yet, I will. The Bushnell 3200 2-6 is a handgun scope, which has a 20" eye-relief. This likely will not function on a standard rifle setup, as you're only holding it 4" from your eye, and I'll bet at that close, you won't be able to see anything through that scope..Just trying to save you some $$...

I'd get her a black 2-7, but if it has to be silver, just get her the 3-9x40mm...Not much difference between the 2 and if you go Leupold, they're even closer, and weigh the same...

Camera land wont ship to Canada due to permits...which is too bad they are excellent to deal with. I would top it off with a Leupold FX3 6x42, but a scope is really a personal preference. Nikon seems to be not so good when it does come to warranty issues from what is being said on the hunting sites. You may pay more for the Leupold but they are great and their service is outstanding....second to none.

Similar thread going on here: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=339233

If this is going to be her primary rifle and you would consider going to the price of a VXIII then you may want to consider the Zeiss Conquest line. They can be found for slightly less than Leupold. The 3-9x 40mm model comes in silver. That being said the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x 40mm is an excellent scope and can be found for a lot cheaper than MRSP. They were $200 when our dollar was at par at a local gun store.
