As I said in my original post.. I'm getting back into hunting and my head is spinning as I shop for my workhorse 12 gauge. I didn't have 3 1/2" back in the day and I'm wondering if I really even need it! I seem to recall nailing my geese with 3" mags back then. So here's my question: (please respond with actual experiences or known issues please!)

Aside from the very expensive Maxus and Versamax (which I'm not really inclined to buying - Benelli out of the question) can anyone make any recommendations? Obviously I'll need to hold the gun to see how it feels but I really would appreciate any good advice on what is reliable and what is not worth the money.

Remington 11-87, Mossberg 935, Stoeger 3500? Pros/Cons? Does the 11-87 Super mag 3 1/2" also take 2 3/4"? cycling problems in any of these?

I run a Baikal MP153 with 3.5 inch shells, loaded with #2 pellets going 1550 fps, for geese & ducks.

Having the 3.5 inch chamber is about case capacity, you simply can throw MORE pellets at your target with a 3.5 inch shell compared to a 3 inch... NO, it's not needed, but the denser your pattern, the better!

Cheers
Jay

I have a 935 I use just for waterfowl and it happens to cycle heavier ( 11/4 oz) 23/4" shells though the factory paper work says they will not guarantee it will cycle anything but 3 and 3.5" shells.. I think it's too heavy for an all round shotgun but I like it for waterfowl. I use Blackcloud BB in 3.5" for geese and Winchester Xpert #2 3" for ducks as both pattern well in my gun.

I would recommend a mossberg 930. Ellwood epps had a combo for $538 plus tax and shipping with three chokes and two barrels. can not beat that deal. Sounds like the perfect gun for you.

the choices out there are plenty , i need a trap gun this spring . i was using my of the day like you say marlinn goose gun last year my first year in trap , there were no rules except 12 gage 2 3/4 #7 1/2 or #8 shot . there were sigles doubles pumps semies no one was excluded . this year i.m looking as well for a new or used and i think i'll be going to the maverick over/under the price is right and they seem to be popular and are selling quickly around here anyway . i hope this is a good choice for my second season upcoming in may .

ran an 1187 for years without issue, now running a Urika, just cuz it feels better. The 1187 was a magnum 3".

Thanks everyone for the replies... Leaning towards the Stoeger... All the research I've done seems well worth the gamble...Happy hunting brothers!
