I just got back from the range , trying out my sporter 303 Mark 4. Its very accurate but the darn thing shoots 8 inches high at 100 yards. It doesnt mater what ammo you use. I tried the regular peep hole sight,... then I tried the Laddersight,, set the elevation sight down as low as it would go...and still way high.
IS there Different front SITES you can install. mine has F1 & 075 stamped on the front sight. I need something Taller
well I decided to sell it and maybe look at some new tools for the shop.

Your front sight is pretty tall to still be shooting 8” high. Sporter enfields can be a bugger to diagnose but do you have the action screw pillar (aka collar bushing) in the rifle? If not then the action might be far too tight to the stock and that has huge implications on POA vs POI. Is your barrel making firm contact in the barrel channel or is it loose? I’d make sure the collar bushing was present if so consider centre bedding the stock and ensure the draws were making proper contact using a feeler gauge. I believe they made up to a +0.090” front sight. It is very difficult to diagnose without examining the rifle. Enfields can be a puzzle. Do you have a good quality and consistent 2nd trigger stage?

I went searching the WEB ,..and this is what I found on a 303 enfield Forum-

As others have stated, enfields were zeroed for 300 yds using the larger peep site or battle sight. This means the rifle should shoot about 8-inchs high at 100 yds last I checked.

The front blade came in about eight or so different heights for use in zeroing the rifle at the armory, and elevation was not adjustable by the soldier.

Different blade heights are available and are a good idea to have several if you decide to reloade in the future. Don't file down - I tried this before getting different blades. Check Springfield Sports for replacement blades.

This is exactly what I am encountering.

I did check the collar bushing and it fits up snug. Wood to steal is tight.

Assuming that your aperture to front sight is about 29 inches, then to lower your point of impact 6 inches at 100 yards (3600 inches) (leaving yourself 2 inches high), you will have to raise your front sight by an additional .048". I am pretty certain I have the math correct - distance to be moved at 100 yards (6") times distance between front and rear sight (29") divided by 3,600 (100 yards in inches) equals change to front sight height.

Using information from Hornady #7, their 180 grain BT-FMJ (similar to military bullet) has a Ballistic Coefficient of .470. With a nominal muzzle velocity of 2,400 fps, and if "0" at 300 yards, the bullet should strike +6.3" @ 100 yards and +7.1" @ 200 yards. (Using Nosler #7 Ballistic table for bullet with B.C. .470 to .479)

I did find a bush fix. the fellow "reworked" the ladder site. He filled down the Slider so it would drop lower, & used a round file on the ladder frame at the bottom. he took the slot down 25 thou. claims it worked. ??

wow 075 +048 pretty high. I dont imagine a person can even get one that tall.

I see that an XS Ghost Sight came with a plastic doo-hickey that you install in place of a front sight and snip it off until you get your groups to elevation - measure it and that tells you the height of front sight to order. I don't see why a home handyman can't file out a front sight for a Lee Enfield to any height desired?
Or, sacrifice a Lee Enfield sight - file off the blade, then drill and tap to create a front sight like on an AR?

This, also the lowest setting on the ladder sight is 200 yards, so even at 100 you’ll have to hold low

I two have a enfield that shoots exactly like yours finding a taller or any sight blade is very hard ,, went to western gun parts , spoke with the old boy there , he said that the dovetail on enfield only like 1/4 '' he claims no one in Canada has anything that size , so If anyone else knows where a sight blade for enfields could be found let us know .

According to the publication Shoot to Live, the rifle is supposed to be 8.5" high at 100 yards for a 300 yard zero.
If I were to want to do something, I'd weld extra meat on top of the front blade, then carve down to suit. Reblue when done.

I removed the rear site and modified it to drop well below the 200 yard mark. looks like its sitting a lot lower now. This rifle shot lower using the ladder sites than the battle site. so..gonna head to the range and see how close I am. "it has to have made SOME difference".

here we go-

I started by filling the slot lower.

made it flush with the original peep hole.

this is what the slider looked like before.-

this is the shaved down slider now. took alot of the bottom. sits flush now.

re- blued & sanded installed back on.

UPDATE- after being at the range,...the sight in the pic is 8 inches low. simply raise it a tiny bit.

I think I am speaking for a large number of people who would appreciate it if you all didn't run out and "modify" your Lee Enfield rear sights. Front sights of all different heights can be found on Ebay among other places.

OH c'mon man , lighten up. This is a very easy way to "modify" your rear sight for people who cant Zero their rifle and have no other way. Its a very helpful tutorial to solve a problem that CANT be fixed with a front site alone. And I speak for the huge amount of people that are going to find this "modification" very useful.

Lots of Enfield front sight blades to be bought on eBay, singles and full sets. I’ve bought some at gun shows as well.

A "farmer" fix I have done more than once is to put a piece of epoxy on top of the front sight, and then file it to shape, and paint black. Works well, and no damage is done.

I have several pistols with an epoxied front sight.

But for the #4 I bought a complete set of front sights for about $35 on ebay.

Back in the day, I use to give away spare rear sights that I use to have lying around. Recently, when I needed a milled one for a project, I realized that maybe I should have kept one or two. My point is that rear enfield sights are becoming expensive so personally I would not mod one. I would rather adjust my poa or throw an Addley no smith on.
