Like the title when it comes to AR-15 type rifles I am as green as they come  I will be recieving a bonus in December and have narrowed it down to 3 possible things to get. My first restricted is on that list. I went through the entire Ar-15 pic thread and found what I would like. The pics below are rifles from members of this site and if you are upset that I borrowed your rifles pic please PM. It was the only way I could ask as I don't know what most of the items should be called :(

Things I need help with
1- for the rifle I want am I better to build from parts or buy a complete rifle and add the acc.?
2- What am I looking for as a cost to build a rifle with the specs below?
3- If I go with a complete rifle is there one I should consider? I found the RRA A4 Varmint from Questar and the Stag Arms 6R from Arms East is there any better start than those and which one would be better if I don't go the parts route?

My father use to own an AR so he will be able to help when I get the rifle (never got to handle it as he sold it when they became restricted) I also plan to read the manuel many times before I start shooting. I have 15 years shooting expierience and 10 years of owning firearms but all bolt guns. I will admit I am just doing a search as I am having a hard time spending cash on a rifle I can't shoot on my land and friends but I have wanted one since I seen photo's of dads. Plus it's a bonus cheque so I mean it was money I wasn't counting on anyways :D Iam also considering two other options aswell so there is no guarantee I will buy an AR but will apreciate all your help in my research trying to decide.

The pics below will have the items I want on my AR outlined with a paint program.

I like the grip/stock/picatinny rail for optics and the heavy bull barrel of this rifle

So how and where do I start?

Thanks in advance

Jason

Edit: If the main answer is build from parts is there any places to look besides the EE,Arms East, and Questar.

If you want different stocks, railed hand guards and pistol grips etc your better off to do a build. There is no sense buying a stock rifle and swapping out all those parts. Your rifles cost is going to get driven up. The lower receiver is very easy to do. There is a great guide at AR15 dot com. I used that to do my first. The upper I got built by Casey at TacOrd for I think 50.00. He did a great job. By doing a build you can also spread out the cost if that is a concern for you also. Spikes tactical lowers are fantastic, and on sale for 199.00 at Questar.

I had a feeling that this was going to be the route most would recomend for the reason's you mentioned. I have faith that with instructions I could acomplish a build as Iam handy. I looked at the spikes tactical stuff but I just put a set of tires on both vehicles, brakes on the car, and a leupold on my hunting rifle so everything will have to wait for the bonus cheque and I don't imagine that they will still have any at that price come Dec. Thanks for the help.

Try the guys at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply in Calgary for most of this stuff. The Shortie AR in your first Post is one of his. I have one of thier rifles and they put a custom seriel # on it for me with customized fire control markings.
Good luck and have fun.
