H&R Handi rifles are capable of excellent accuracy. Most are 2-3 MOA out of the box, with some MOA guns... I'm talking consistent accuracy... But they are mostly easaily tunable to MOA... There are a number of simple accurizing tips for Handi's... The best forum is Greybeard's... Scroll down to the H&R section and then read through the FAQ sticky in the centerfire section... Lots of good info there. I own three dozen Handi rifles in more than two dozen calibers... I love the platform.

Good rifles for the money. The 12 & 20 ga. Ultra Slug Hunters are very accurate bomb launchers as well.

My uncle has a 30 06 in the laminate stock. It will shoot just under an inch with good hand loads and 150 gr bullets. I think it's Sierra Gamekings he's running through it. Also used to own a hardwood stocked 223, a real shooter as well.
There was a warranty issue with the 30 06. The hinge loosened up badly on it but upon sending it in for warranty they gave him a brand new rifle. I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue, and service was good, though not speedy.
Good rifles for the dollar value IMO.

My .45-70 synthetic Handi will do 3" at 100 yards with a Skinner peep. 3 .458 cast bullets look like a tight group in 3" on paper. Very nice made Remington H and R. Good value.

I have done a Krag conversion... Simple job... I "long-throated" it and ran heavier spire points in it. Also done many .22K's from Hornets, .357 MAX from Mag, .445 SM from .44 Mag, .22 BR from Hornet, .358 from .35 Rem, a .260 stub, and a .338F stub... Got more on the table too...
I have been packing a T/C contender as my truck gun this fall, in various calibers . Contender calibers are a bit anemic for my taste.
So I was thinking handi rifle, cut the barrel back abit, scope it, and at $270.00 from cabelas this week it would a good knock around gun.

Personally I'd love to have one someday modified into 6.5x55 swede.
Myself and others find they have a break in period and get better the more you use them. Caution...they can be addictive rifles to own.

To get a Swede you will have to do a rebore or a stub... I went with a stub for my 40 degree .260 for my 6.5mm...
OP - here is a Handi in 7.62X39 with a chopped 18" barrel and thumbhole stock...

Hmmm so is a stub is removing the old barrel from the receiver part it's attached to and wielding in place the new barrel?
I wonder if a surplus swede Mauser barrel would work?

Yeah, to stub you cut off the barrel just in front of the barrel lug to maintain the factory fit, and the bore it out... Then turn a shank on the new barrel and thread it in... True the face and cut the extractor slot and chamber to whatever caliber you choose... I had to do this for the 6.5 and .338 because H&R has not made either of those calibers...but you can do any caliber this way... I just got a hankering to shoot the whole .308 family in the Handi platform... Go figure.
