NEF accuracy

To get a Swede you will have to do a rebore or a stub... I went with a stub for my 40 degree .260 for my 6.5mm...

OP - here is a Handi in 7.62X39 with a chopped 18" barrel and thumbhole stock...

Oops... I'll have to post the pic later, I'm on my phone...

Hoytcanon... Ya sure have fun with the H&R platform.
Good on ya lad! Tinkerin' on a favorite rifle is good fer the soul.:)

Then my soul must be in good shape... I am putting the finishing touches on a pair of Handi .44 Mag BC carbines, starting a 9.3X74R barrel stub project, restocked and fitted my Whelen and .358 Win last night and chambered one .45/70 to .45/120... That should be plenty to play with! ;-)

Many coyotes have Fallen to that little rig ( Nef Superlight 223 + Tasco 6X24X40 + bipod )... JP.

X2!!!

I've been admiring your work for a while now, absolutely top-notch! I especially liked your fullstock NEF, what calibre was that again? Could you please post pics of it if it's not too much trouble?

The gun you are referring to is a .357 Maximum;

The OP may like something like this swap barrel pair in .30/30 & 7.62X39;

I just finished a swap barrel set last night, in .35 Whelen and .356/.358 Win... I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

The project that I am really excited about is the 9.3X74R stub... it'll be out in the moose woods next fall!

I have done a Krag conversion... Simple job... I "long-throated" it and ran heavier spire points in it. Also done many .22K's from Hornets, .357 MAX from Mag, .445 SM from .44 Mag, .22 BR from Hornet, .358 from .35 Rem, a .260 stub, and a .338F stub... Got more on the table too...

What kind of performance increase did you notice going to 357 Max? Considering finding someone to ream my chamber from mag to max...

Why don't you do a couple dozen of them while you're at it? There are enough 9.3 aficionados on here, you would have no problem sending them to new homes.

Ted

Hello Ted... The stub route is not really a cost effective means of achieving a gun for a specific cartridge... It presupposes certain criteria... Primarily that you really want that particular caliber in "that" particular platform. In my case, I do... Not sure how many others would be on that wagon... At this price point a lot of options open up. I don't see many passing on a new CZ 550 FS in 9.3X62 in favor of a stubbed Handi rifle in 9.3X74R... Would they? Interesting question...

The Mag to Max ream is one of my favorites and one of the best performance boosters... I do my MAX reams from Mag by hand with a "T-Handle" on the pilot reamer and lots of cutting oil... Simple job really... I highly recommend it.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing, I especially like the nifty Monte Carlo on the Maximum.

count me on one ... im lefty so a fs CZ is a no no and still waiting to get an answer for fs in Zastava ...

I am thinking of getting a NEF single shot for a project gun in one of the big game calibers. Can anyone with experience with one of these, give me some indication of expected accuracy? thanks.

My NEF Handi-Rifle in 45-70 GVT produces about 1 1/2" 3-shot groups at 50 yards with the factory iron sights shot seated at a bench with the factory HSM "Bear Load" (430 grain hard cast lead bullet) ammo I purchased at Cabelas in Winnipeg when it was $28 per box of 20 rounds.
Now the price has gone up to over $44 a box.
The recoil is quite stout.
That HSM "Bear Load" ammo is a lot more potent than the watered down Remington 405 grain trapdoor factory ammo.

For my .45/70 Handi's I tend to load to "lever action" levels... I have run about 200 rounds of the 325 FTX through one gun at "Falling Block" (Ruger #1) levels... But I'm not sure what a steady diet of these loads will do to the hinge pin and latch... That batch was for a specific hunt (successful)... For casual clay busting for Timmies coffee's we run 405 Cast at "Trapdoor" levels...

On a side note:

I find it amusing that the stock butt pad on my 45/70 NEF is hard plastic while the butt pads on my 30/30 and two .243 H&Rs are rubber. I'm seriously considering changing the 45/70s buttplate before I finally try it, lol.

The NEF Handi-Rifles are very strong (lots of steel) and I believe they are mentioned by Buffalo Bore in their literature as one of the rifles that will shoot their +P ammo safely.
Both NEF and H&R have been purchased by Remington but I don't think the rifles will plummet in quality like the Marlin rifles did after that company's takeover.
I think even Remington can make break-open SAs without fracking it up.
Let's keep our fingers crossed anyway.

I have dozens of Handi's in a multitude of configurations... One of the features that I appreciate is their toughness... BUT, they are not rated for "magnum" rounds for a reason... And that reason is the latch pin... They have been known to "slack-up" under repeated heavy loads in the larger calibers, including .45/70 at #1 levels... I do shoot heavy loads, and I am not "overly" concerned, but I don't intend to make it a consistent habit... I have rechambered Handi rifles to a multitude of calibers and plan more, belted magnums are not on the menu.... Nor are 500 grain #1 loads for the .45/70's...

My Handi 45-70 is an older gun.
I don't know if anything has changed with the design since the Big Green takeover but the Latch mechanism on my gun is a very robust looking hunk of steel.
I've pushed a few boxes of heavy HSM and Buffalo Bore ammo thru mine and NOTHING is loosening up.
