Neighbor's dog is harrassing wildlife

i would be suprised if anyone who posted to shoot the dog lives in a rural setting...this isnt a new occurance....where i come from this happens all the time..animal wanders through the yard...dogs take chase

seen my share if neighbors dogs end up in my yard chasing a deer or moose and it always ended with a quick phone call to said neighbor who came to pick up his dog...usually with a cold six pack to say thanks for the call

if you cant talk this out with the neighbor IN PERSON where people can look into each others eyes...then call the authorities...dont shoot the dog cause the owner is lazy

theres my opinion
Okay, my contribution. FWIW. I have no hesitations about shooting a dog doing that. However, it would be a FINAL RESORT. It is not the dog's fault, it is the owner's. I would talk to the owner. Most (and I live in a RURAL area) will be cooperative and do try to eliminate that because they are hunters as well.
If that didn't get a favourable response, I would contact a CO and report it, demanding that since this is a repetitive action, they take steps with the owner to curtail it.
If it still continues, contact the CO again and tell them to come and get the dog. Esp if you can catch it on video. Don't shoot a man's dog just because you can. That's definitely not cricket!!
I have seen neighbour's dogs HELPING mine with cows!! I have seen neighbour's dogs chase off coyotes. PLEASE!! Common sense first.
And I don't care how close the dog was to you, doesn't justify murder of two officers. Don't care where in "redneckville" you live. They were executing thier duty. They weren't just shooting at whatever moved.
While I don't agree with the heavy-handedness of government officials in the Ruby Ridge incident, I certainly don't agree with Randy Weaver's families responses.

BANG problem solved then call Fish Cops..................Harold

Shoot my familys dog and your problems are just beginning Harold
Then again waking up in a hospital relearning how to walk ,talk, how toconjucate verbs and sucking food through a straw might bring back childhood memories, huh?'
Maybe those fish cops might stop by for bedside visit.

Province? Location?

When I was living in Moose Jaw, guys that wanted to keep their bird dogs made sure that they were wearing blaze orange vests, as free running dogs were pretty much a limited lifespan situation.
BC, dogs on the farm were shot without any to-do. Livestock Protection Act allows it.

Call the DNR/CO's whomever. Good odds that they will shoot the dog and deal with the owner.
Not the dog's fault, but I wouldn't be leaving my mutts to run, or expecting them not to wander.

Cheers

You have issues.
I just read all 8 of your posts in this forum and none are firearm related, you seem to have your own agenda and it is an odd one.
I wont try to explain the difference between a guy trying to protect his property against predators and shooting a man between the eyes then moving on to arson, because I am pretty sure you understand that what you just typed has crossed a line.

Crystal ball says pink letters are in the future for that one!

^ I agree. But what happens when a cougar, wolf or coyote harasses a deer out of season? What difference is there, really, from a dog?

Hey, Whoa!
I don't know about Ontario, but in BC you certainly can't kill a cougar or wolf, unless you are licenced to do so, and the season is open on the wolf or cougar.
Whether the predator was "harassing" deer, or moose, has nothing to do with it.

I'm pretty sure it started with illegal firearm modifications that lead to federal investigations.

So you are proposing that 2 g-man just sitting around in the bush shooting dogs?

Both those g-men are feeding worms now
One died real slow, moral is you don't know who your messing with when you shoot peoples pets
Emotions run high after an animal bonds with you and your family bonds to it
Police routinely shoot to protect department K9's (ala Calgary shooting)
I'll lock and load to protect mine
One would be completly justified shooting someone who came in their yard and shot family pet, who knows where he'll aim next
No jury would convict homeowner of using unreasonable force

Moral of the story is...the new guy here needs to settle down or his time here will be short. Your pushing it. Warning that infractions will start flying if this goes further south. Make your point, be respectful and act like this is your grandma's living room.

I'm saying they did know who they're messing with and those 2 didn't just woke up one day and decided to shoot someone's dog.

Dogs get shot all the time when they trespass on ranchers. I know of 2 goldens that got whacked by a farmer by one of my buddy's place around Ottawa. They made a big deal out of it in the newspaper, but no charges were laid.

After reading through this, I can't help but wonder why you care what is happening on his side of the fence. The dogs here have snagged the occasional duck or muskrat and I've never lost any sleep over it.

I would hope a neighbor would give me one warning if my dogs were up to no good on his property though.....and I would fix the problem. I would extend the same courtesy. My .02

Something else you quick on the trigger wild westerners may be forgetting. You are gun owners and I presume the last thing you want is for the police to be at your door, telling you they have come for your guns.
This is exactly what the outcome could easily be, if you shot a neighbors dog.
Unsafe use of a firearm, discharging a firearm in an unsafe place, illegal use of a firearm, dangerous use of a firearm, followed by being considered too dangerous and unstable a person to own firearms.
Do you still want to be a hero and "save" a wild animal from your neighbors dog?

My thoughts exactly! WTF do you care if your neighbours dog kills a fox, or chases a deer. Maby he will also scare off coyotes, skunks, and racoons! I would be glad that he is acting as a pest deterant. For those of you saying shoot the dog, you guys are truly messed up. If the dog is attacking livestock that is one thing as you are protecting your property, but chasing a deer is not any cause for concern. I actually agree with Cooey39 on this one! Shoot my dog for some B.S. reason like this and you will regret it believe that. Ask yourself this; what harm is this dog actually doing? Is it costing you anything? Did it harm you in any way? Your only case here is the dog being on your property, but this is not any reason to shoot it, by any stretch of the imagination. Until the dog actually kills a dear or something not considered a pest STFU!

I can remember the Kelowna RCMP issuing a warning in the newspaper years ago that loose dogs would be shot on site. IIRC correctly, they also intended to fine the owner of said dogs too.

It seems they had a huge problem with dogs forming into packs and running deer. They either chased them and mauled them to death, or even if the deer got way it usually died of exhaustion.

I know a relative of mine has dropped dogs on his ranch in Heffley Creek when they came around harassing his cows and calves. He would give them a warning first, but when they refused to leave he would pull out the Min-14 and dispatch them.

What the hell is wrong with you people?

My dog is a member of my family. If you shot my dog... it would not end well for anyone involved. You don't kill someone's pet.

Have you even talked to your neighbor yet? Tried calling the game warden? This is not a shoot first and ask questions later scenario.

Yes finally not some small #### idiot with a recent PAL is responding, and to the rest of you can a LONE german sheperd catch a deer?
NO! it can't, this is just a bored pet doing what comes natural to it
If it chased off coyotes would you want to kill it?
Ultimatley most responding to this thread have no problem stalking and shooting the f**king deer, but heaven forbid a highly intelectual breed of dog that is chosen for police/military service and seeing eye for the blind chases it off its property.
I know a rottie akita cross that eats deer year round...yes, several of the big breeds can take down a deer.
