Never trust a seller when they tell you what year a gun was made always ask for the S/N and check it out.

I got a gun shipped to me last month that was “made in 1897” (got it off GB) but after I check out the s/n it was passed the cut off date.it was made in 1898, The seller had close to 2000 a++ feedback and was a FFL dealer that had a shop!! So I trusted him..

So 15 min’s after pulling the gun out of the Canada post box out came the chop saw…

The gun was a LIKE NEW in VG shape. 90-95% Factory blue colt 1892 in 41 Colt. With a 3” barrel so it was a prohibited gun. So I had to chop it… :( (I did not want to weld it up seeing there was a lot of good parts on the gun that are like new.. hell the bore is like new also.

Do you think I did the right thing? I did not want to trust shipping a prohibited gun back to him… and I did not want the hassle to turning it into the cops and not getting my money back…

i hope by cutting the gun maybe ill get some of my money back.

This should be a Sticky..

this is a site i use to check what year guns where made

I guess if the date is important like in your case, then it makes good sense to be sure of the date.
Asking for the serial number to double check doesn't seem to complicated.
I did not want to trust shipping a prohibited gun back to him…
Why not send it back though?
It sounds like you just paid the money and buddy in the States just shipped it to you with no paperwork.....who knew it was so easy!

He put in "his" letter saying when it was made and that it was a legal antique in Canada.. Like I ask all my sellers to do. Also it was in customs for 1.5 weeks before then let it go..

I did send him a email , and he never got back to me yet…and that was close to 2 weeks ago.

if it was made in 1898 like you said then it was Antique in the USA you coulda just returned it No Problem.

tho depending on how many usefull parts it has maby was good choping it and keeping them usefull parts up here.

1 and a half weeks and they couldn't tell if it was an antique or not.....nice work Customs Canada.

Read the definitions of a "Prescribed Antique" as they relate to a handgun

Before the date, more or less chosen at random, the firearm is considered harmless, and can be bought by anyone with folding money, no ID required. After that date, the firearm becomes a scaryyyyy eeeeeevil prohib that causes babies and kittens to die by its very existence. Same make, same model, same caliber, different production date.

So the folks that built our cocked up firearms laws would have the world believe.

Cheers

Ummm. What difference does a year make? And why destroy it? I don't really know what the big deal is. Please inform me.

1897 and before it is an antique in Canada and does not require registration as it is basically treated as "not a gun", the one year later makes it so it has to be registered but because it has a 3" barrel it is a prohibited firearm that cannot be legally imported or registered. I know it doesn't make sense but that's our stupid laws.

I've almost bought a couple that were advertised as antique but found they were not when i checked serial numbers. I think part of the problem is that the US antique rules are different, 1898 is still antique for them but it has to be pre-1898 up here.

If it is pre 1898 with a barrel less than or equal to 4.125 inches is it still prohib. or is it prescribed antique.?????????........:D

Cbsa(customs) lets stuff through that they should stop only to have other officials kick in your door to seize them in your possession. In this case it would be best to cover your ASSetts like you did.Especially considering the political events with the police chiefs speaking up about zero tolerance for firearm owners.
