New 2,000 Meter Range In Grande Prairie Alberta

Hey all.

A local gun shop owner and a few like minded people are working to start a 2,000 yard range just north of Grande Prairie.

If you are close enough to travel to use this facility in the future, would you guys mind sending an e-mail to Plan@CountyGP.ab.ca please?

There are local nay sayers. And my local club had its rifle and outdoor handgun range permanently shut down due to encroachment of a golf course and sub division. So support for this project would be really appreciated.

The project is called Saddle Hills Target Sports Association.

Totally need a real range for GP, Its getting harder and harder to find a place to shoot around here.

Considering they approved a golf course and subdivision that eventually led to the shutdown of the only range in the area they must provide land for replacement.

How does one shoot 2000 yards and stay under the 10k joule limit? Any specific calibre?
Sent an email to the county in support

I've taken a 6.5 creedmoor to 2,200 yards, but it's certainly not the most efficient for that distance, nor the most practical under most circumstances.

The bigger and faster the projectile, the more ballistically efficient it's going to be and easier to spot impacts. But price starts to go up quickly once you get above .30 cal, as does recoil.

Reasonably, a 7 SAUM/Sherman Short Mag would probably be a good minimum. The sweet spot is probably .30 cal, reasonable recoil, plenty of great projectiles available, cost isn't exorbitant. .300 PRC if you want to stay with a standard magnum bolt face, or if you want a little bit more power, the .300NM is an excellent choice (though it does requires a .338LM bolt face, which limits your action options). .33 cal's start to get more expensive, and there's a perceivable bump in recoil from a .30 cal. Personally I don't see .33's being necessary for 2,000 yards, but it's an option if you want it.

No real need for the .375+ cartridges at 2,000 yards, with the plethora of excellent projectiles that have become available in the smaller calibers.

Max are you on the Board?

I know the guy spearheadin it has been talking to my buddy about being a match director to tr-fclass matches.

Have you guys reached out to the army cadets yet? They could really use a range, especially for any of the kids who make marksmen level one, and will be travelling to Ottawa.

I’ll fire off an email.

I would also put in the word to corlanes. I know Travis shoots long range,

If they get further with this, can you fire me a pm. I’ll take time off work to help in the construction phase of it.

I’ll also see if i can dig up the names of the 2 olympians you have in GP for target shooting. The push from promoting it via that angle may very well help. One is a friends dad so will be easy, the lady is friend of a friend of a friend so will be harder to track her down to see if she’ll put in an email.

Keegs; no I'm not on the board. Just have lots of money tied up in firearms and looking for a safe place to shoot.

I wanted to make this post months ago, but do to local political climate, I was asked not too. As for other details, I am not aware of at this point. Reaching out to the Army Cadets sounds like a great idea.

Thank you for your efforts in helping make this happen. I am told that there are people and equipment ready to be donated to clearing land. I am hoping to get the fella who is spear heading this to view this thread.
