New 870`s have problems?

Sucks in one way, but then again it may be just a natural part of your 870 wearing in ...
*Not a personal thing Rob, Remington just rubs me the wrong way now*:)

All in all I owned it for 6 days. Its not my 870 anymore. To me (as a machinist) that’s not wearing in. It’s a corporation bending me over for my hard earned cash. If sh*t like that happened where I work, we would have some explaining to do. Not its "wearing in" or "just polish the chamber a smidge". Our reamers are worn and need to keep producting up. So boys just up the feed rate "n" get r done. Or its we don't care and we have no QC anymore so FU the consumer. It is dangerous and just plain cheeping out. I have shot lost of older wingmasters and never had a complaint. The newer stuff is just plain garbage from my experience. I now see why the more expensive shotguns are the way to go. Benelli has yet to give me any problems or craptastick issues.

It's really too bad there isn't a Remington rep on the board like there is for Robarm and other companies. Maybe they don't care that much about our little market, but I have already seen enough people say "never another Remington" that as a percentage it must be similar in the US. It's still such a kick in the ass that "old reliable" is being beaten by other guns.

Actually if somebody knows someone useful from Remington (because there is certainly a variety of people here), maybe they can give them a heads up about this thread. Just to say "hey, lots of people aren't happy and it's getting worse".

I am still going to try out a new 870, only because the older ones have been 100%, but if it isn't decent then Remington is finished for me.

My 870 Super Mag was not very reliable. Jamming all the time, shells stuck in the chamber. I think it was the Winchester cheap loads that were sticking also.
Now take in mind this was a new gun not used. It should cycle and fire ALL shells. If they can't cut a chamber properly then they shouldn't sell the gun.

I finallly fixed it when I bought a Mossberg, and yes it fires ALL shells, no jams.

i own a 870 express . it has been problem free. i also have a couple of wingmasters older guns and they operate much smoother than the express .both will get the job done .as i see it the express is produced to compete with a cheaper range of guns and is not marketed as a high end gun .

No, it's certainly not marketed as a high end gun, but it should atleast work. A shell sticking in the chamber can be a serious safety issue (especially if you're trying to clear a loaded firearm)

The problem is, the newer Wingmaster and Police aren't all that much better than the Express line anymore, a shame considering their hefty price premium.

Never had one problem with my 870, think the best advice given to me was "Pump it like a man" Its not a fancy gun, use it hard. When I get out to shoot I put hundreds of very cheap rounds through it.

Bought my first 870 17 years ago it was one of my first firearms and I remeber it fondly. If I was 18 again Id buy a semi but still have a soft spot for the 870's especially the wingmasters.
Theres a huge aftermarket for them they are as reliable as an AK type firearm. If I could only have one firearm it would be a shotgun.

Personally i own a 870 police mag, cause i like the 870 platform alot.

The finish on the express or tactical line isnt as good as the older wingmasters /police. However when you can grab a expess in Canada for $370-400, it gets alot of folks shotgunning, that couldnt afford a $700-1000.00 SG. Dont be tricked by the "tactical line" its just an express in disguise.

I have had expresses and other brands of shotgun. Remington like other manufactures cut corners to to reduce costs. in order to put out a commercial "value" range of weapons, commonly available at walmart in the US. There retail market is the US (NOT CANADA) and typically people there who buy 870 express shotguns are paying $300.00 for these and that all they could afford.

Their commercal "retail" sales of guns in the U.S., out sells LE and Miltary sales hands down. Companies like these are only willing to make products to meet a price point of the average U.S. gun buyer, nothing more. In other words, the U.S. gun market is large (with more potencial buyers who in most states need not be qualified) 1/3 Americans own a firearm. The Canadian gun market is small and manufactures dont produce products tailored to our needs, wants or pricepoints. We recieve the spillover/surplus from the US firearms market, this is seen with ammo as well, US demand is always met first.

Getting back to the gun.

Soak that bolt and action bars in CLP, then break that sucker in 200-400 shells. The gun will polish its self.

With the steel low based shells (target load) the expand and deform making for a harder extraction. You have to be aggressive (like all things in life) on the extraction. Just rip the forend back those shells will have to come out (dont worry about breaking the gun). Or if you cant extract take both of your hands on the forend and slam the butt into the ground.

Shotgunning is agressive in nature, the shooter has to dominate that weapon. Go to the gym and man up...

Couldn't say. I have a new 870express from about a year ago. Have run hundreds of rounds through it - bird, buck and slug.

Had 2 failure to eject issues. Absolutely NOTHING else. I've cleaned it 3 times.

OK. Let me ask this...

For those who say or feel that the new 870 express's don't measure up...what else would you buy?

As mentioned, the 870 express is a basement price...what else is better for maybe a couple hundred more?

Ithaca model 37. The defence model is $549. The fancier models are more like a thousand bucks though. To stay in that price range I'd be looking at the browning BPS's, although not everyone likes the bottom eject. I have a 20g upland model and it's been flawless...although I'm not the hugest fan of the english style stock. I've got an 870 express and it works, but the finish just isn't up to the standard of the ithaca 37 defence.

I bought an Express package with 3 barrels last year. It works fine and goes "BANG" whenever I pull the trigger with live ammo in it. The only thing that bugged me was the very fine oxidation it exhibited when I bought it. I cleaned it up but this gun will rust if not aggressively maintained. Maybe I'll get a stainless one and dump the express.
