Just got this new to me 1874 SHARPS , CALIBER: 45-70 GOVT Armi Sport Reproduction that came equipped with a Tasco 1860 Replica 4x15 A-563 Buffalo Brass Scope that had been retrofitted with what looks like HiLux "Rabbit Ears" rear and front mounts.

First thing I need to do is get the scope remounted so it's usable. Does anyone know if the Hi Lux long scope extensions will work with the Tasco?

Regards, Retreever

That I do not know. I would suspect not due to being different manufacturers. Threads may be different albeit it is a 3/4" tube. As well the optics may not be clear due to spacing between lenses. Find out what the eye relief for the scope is. Determine from Hi-lux website what the mount spacings are for that scope length. The rear mount may be based from the rifles rear sight location or a predescribed distance from the breach. Its all doable just find the right measurements for mounting so that the mount scale points work right.

Hi MC, do I understand the HiLux extensions have lenses? I was under the impression they were just tubes. My research on the 32" Tasco scope says mounts center to center should be 23.5". My plan is to move the rear mount back as far as I can on the barrel and then set the front mount based on that measurement.

Roger,
I'm speaking from a position of ignorance here, but to me the spacing would be dictated by the length of the tube. I watched a YouTube vid by HiLux that showed them mounting a "short" scope and the distance was 7.250" Maybe contact them to see what they recommend for a tube the length of yours, seeing as you are using their mounts. Just a thought.
Good luck!

PS: I'm not sure where the magnifiers are located in that type of scope but maybe the front lens is just glass in the extension???

ya you need some real mounts if you are going to use and keep that set up Hi Lux have good scopes but crappy mounts
you need proper spacing the scope needs to slide under recoil.

I have both a 32" Navy Arms marked scope the same as the OP's and a 18" Tasco marked tube scope and neither of them "slide under recoil".

The 32" has what is described as a "Malcolm mounting system" on the MVA site. It appears to be similar but not exactly the same as the OP's. The front sight provides the windage movement as well as a pivot movement to accommodate the up-down movement of such a long tube, it has a screw locking collar to prevent back& forth movement under recoil after scope is positioned for eye relief. The rear sight mechanism provides the up down movement and the scope tube is allowed to slide through the mount when changing elevation...it is never tight to the tube.

The 18" Tasco also has a locking ring at the front mount that has to be tightened after changing the rear mount. On this scope both windage & up & down adjustments are made at the rear mount with Unertl type adjusting screws.
My 32" scope is mounted on a RB and the rear eye piece is a good 4" further back than the OP's is...If the OP cant find an extension, I fear his only remedy is to have a "jury rigged" intermediary front mount made to move the front mount back the required distance or cut a new dovetail where required.

OP, I can text you some detailed photo's of my set-ups if you like, just PM me a phone #.

Hi MC, I checked the mount position for the HiLux Malcolm long scope and it's just about the same it is 22.75" center to center. One thing that has become evident is that I don't believe the mounts are HiLux , it has been suggested they are likely RHO mounts (which I had never heard of till now). Interesting difference is the knob for raising and lowering the rear sight is positioned horizontally on the right side of the sight whereas the HiLux knobs are all vertical. Regards extension I always thought they were just empty tubes like a 'shade' on a telephoto lens. I may investigate seeing someone local could thread a piece of brass tube stock but I am not sure the number of threads is sufficient.

Thanks, Roger

Hi There, actually turns out these are probably not HiLux mounts but rather come from a firm called RHO and are extremely well built. Tasco specs call for center to center mount spacing for 23 3/4 " for this scope. Check out Fingers post just after yours for additional info.

Thanks Fingers, I also have the 18" Tasco scope mounted on a reproduction rolling block.

On the new Sharps I noticed that the wheel for raising / lowering the rear mount is positioned horizontally rather than vertically like HiLux or MVA, folks on another forum have suggested the mounts may be from a company called RHO which is no longer in business. I think you are right about moving the front sight back if I can't find an extension. I sent you a PM with my phone number for the pics you mentioned.

Thanks, Roger
