NEW ANTIQUE FRT CHANGES and Addendum to altered cartridges handguns

The FRT have listed ALL French 1892s as Restricted for 14 years there just now getting around to changeing them.
Yes even the pre 1898 ones. So why was no one worried about that before today, they just applyed for a letter on the pre 1898 ones.
The FRT numbers on dozens of antiques have them listed as prohibs and restricted the entire thing is a mess full of mistakes. includeing the french 1873s in 45 acp.
some of you are acting like the FRT data base was all perfect with every gun in its correct class right from the start that is just not the case at all.

Anyone even a cave man can show a court or any LEO that the FRT system is wrong because theres enough correct listing in there to show and compare like a webley MKII in 45 acp.

Tho if we just ignored the entire RCMP CFC system and just went by the Law which is SOR /98 -464 and use the cartridge list that we have always used we might be better off.
Rcmp letter is defacto registration. RCMP letter is not required by law never has been. they just come in handy for customs or guys who like to bush pack makes them feel better but just remember it says right on the RCMP letters this letter is granted "based on the info that was supplied"
So lets face it the letters are not as good as most think.
,I have and antique belgian gun with no antique letter based on the guns markings and cartridge it chambers the gun has no maker or serial number but no one is argueing its not antique or perscribed antique it is what it is and antique pre 1893 handgun...
I think if we just make sure our guns meet the requirements of the "LAW" in Age and Caliber then we should be Ok.
Maby im way off but you can not rely on "ALL" the FRT listings when it comes to antique handguns at least not in the last 14 years.

I think if they change the List of cartridges on the NO list by adding some thats when the real troble starts.
But that would be changeing the laws not just policy. It will happen one day in some way thats why its called gun control.

If you have a copy of the law (Cartridge lists) and some proof your gun is pre 1898 thats really all we should need.
But as far as the FRT listing being incorrect on some handguns Customs and myself has been dealing with that for years.

But keep writeing letters do whatever you think will put presure on them to drop this whole thing its all a mess just more of a mess now, thats my 2cts

Anyone know what happened to NO FAC .Com in Red deer AB ? he was charged with abuch of offences and had over 100 antique handguns taken away. 3 or 4 years ago now.
I have never herd a word about this.

Not meant for/at you, just some observations;

"Updating" the FRT information on several antiques in tandem with the current reclassifications is too big of a coincidence to ignore or give the benefit of the doubt.

The FRT database is indeed flawed, and their acknowledgement of this by trying to "fix" it shows that this system needs to be completely changed.

Antique letters are, and always have been a defacto registry. In fact I would hope more support not getting them from this point, knowing the law/proper antiquity of what they're trying to get, and choosing not to play with the SFSS antique letter system anymore. Do not justify their jobs, it's another way of "voting with your wallet" as your phone calls, emails and requests for antique letters is what gives them employment. Protest by not getting the letters anymore, no more phone calls if you can prevent it, and as few communications in any way as possible.

Furthermore if we refuse to play at this point the stats they're keeping on antiques will get skewed and inaccurate.

The NOFAC guy is a topic better brought up at a later date as it would only serve to distract from the current issue.

I agree. The day of the RCMP letter is over.

Yes someone here went to alot of troble to make a home made letter that was really better than the RCMP one as this one listed the Laws ect. was it 41 colt ?
Someone made a really good one i have it filed somwhere on my comp.

Think what would happen if the letter request just stoped dead LOL
Crickets at CFC ....... I think they would just do other things but they would notice.

I usually do not request letters for the same reasons you guys have outlined and I will never request one again in the future. If this was simply CFC internal policy not to issue letters for converted guns thats one thing but since they changed the FRT the problem is if you want to bring in a converted gun from the USA and CBSA calls the lab and they say you are attempting to import a restricted firearm and claiming it as an antique then what? What happens if you sell a handgun that is legally an antique but is not lettered by the CFC (with a restricted FRT#) and the individual you sell it to for example is stopped by a conservation officer in the bush. Who wants to be charged (worst case scenario) with selling an unregisted restricted handgun to an unlicenced individual? (PAL is not required for antiques). The RCMP/CFC either do not realize what a mess this creates or simply do not care, or want to scare any converted caliber antique owners from every letting their guns see the light of day again until they are able to actually change the law (perhaps next election) to how they see fit.

Give them what they want if absolutely necessary. Surely no one here would would buy a converted colt saa without a written guarantee from the seller that it was previously chambered in an acceptable cartridge. I tells everyone that it is good practice to carry a copy of the antique regulations with them and at least some writing about the antique they are carrying

SAA colts would be one gun that i guess we would have to get a letter on.
Because of the new policy but alot of antique guns you could get by without a letter.
Besides the only colts comeing up to Canada now are mainly going to be 41 Lc maby the odd 455 ones but there rare even in the USA.
There is no way without risk to not get any letters.
I know if they dont change that french 1873 45 acp FRT back to antique (fix it) im going to offer anyone who bought a French 1873 in 45 acp off me to get them a letter free it will be in my name so my buyers are protected somewhat.this is only guns i sold,, French 1873 45 acp guns and only if they feel they need it. thats maby a dozen guns or so.

The neat thing about french 1873s converted to 45 acp is they can all chamber and shoot 455 fiochhi MKII Brass, alot of people dont know that same with a 45 acped SAA colt.
Yes 455 MKII case fits perfect in a 45 acp chamber so guys wanting to bush pack that are nervous about 45 acp can use 455 fiochhi which is and antique cartridge.
I have shot it in my own 1873 with no issiues and my saa colts.
But still yes we will have to get letters on some guns if were still gona sell them thats true but we can do it only on guns we have no choice but to get the letters.

Well, I guess every converted 1873 just became converted to 455 mkII
We just have to change the way we interpret our converted antiques

As the FRTs (and the whole system for that matter) are so screwed up, I think the only long term solution is to push for across the board pre-1899 rule for antiques (like the US). Push it to the politicians as BP vs smokeless transition and alignment with accepted US policy.

I will speak with my MP when I see him next.

Well, I guess every converted 1873 just became converted to 455 mkII

If the 45 acp chamber throat is reamed a few tho deeper than it is now them chambers will not head space 45 acp anymore and 45 acp wont fire in any of them guns at all it will fall to deep in the chambers.
I thought about this years ago and knew and old retired gunsmith who was so smart. Anyway once you kiss that chamber down say 20 tho deeper now the guns are all 455 only .
Wont shoot 45 acp no more this will work on french 1873s and SAA colts with 45 acp chambers to.
With the 45 acp colt cylinders they can be reamed for 45 schofield and they will fire 45 sch and all the MKI and MKII 455 brass but no longer shoot 45 acp. because there alot longer than the french 1873 cylinders.
Anyone can buy a 45 colt reamer from brownells for $80 and just only ream to 45 sch depth and then there guns can only shoot the pre 1898 cartridges.
Thats whats cool about 45 acp its very easy to change. Reamers are just turned by hand i seen gunsmith ream lotsa chambers its very easy.
So thats and option is all im saying and its good to have options :)

I agree with this comment. I have owned numerous antique firearms over the years - flintlocks, percussions, pinfires, and BP rifles and handguns. I have never ever bothered to ask a seller to provide an "RCMP letter" with one - or to request one myself -- and I never will. As far as I am concerned, a firearm is either antique under the law, or it isn't, and it isn't up to the RCMP to decide.

Dingus and loki, thanks for all you are doing.

Yes, you guys have been a big help. Thankyou!

I'm attempting to bring some attention to the antiques policy change, not one headline is covering it and it's all CZ858 and Swiss Arms. So if you have points to make about that thread, or critique to give do so there please, it could use a bump every so often as that new forum is moving fast and stuff drops to the bottom.

That looks about right.
