I just got a Remington New Army .44 repro (Pietta) and am looking for some advice on loads and such. Last BP pistol I owned was a Navy .36 some 20 yrs ago:D. Thanks in advance!

Depending on the type of gun powder you use go to the powder makers web site ...they usually have loading data. I am using Hodgdon Triple Seven FFFG and for your gun they recommend 20 - 25 grains for a round ball with a wad. I have never used real black powder so others may help you with that.

Here is a link to Goex FFFG Data:

I use 25 grains of fffg. you'll need to find some oversized lead (.454) wads are not nececary is you use some kind of grease to seal the chambers. But they are cleaner. I found raiding the pantry and stealing the wifes crisco works great, but can get a little messy. the up point is you get to stand in a cloud of black powder and lard smoke every time you shoot. the other option is buying a conversion cylinder. R&D conversions look pretty nice and you could then shoot five rounds of 45acp instead of round ball just by swapping cylinders.

LMAO.... I Love It!:D

Thank you rustysdream with the ball info...

Just make sure the ball is tight against the powder with no air space.
bp revolvers can loaded with as much powder as the cylinder can hold and still take a bullet or ball and not hang up on the barrel.
If you do a reduced load use a non compressible filler to take up the space. I use cornmeal. Using crisco shortening as the grease over the ball some guys tell me that the smoke smells like breakfast in hell.

I have found that these guns are fun and accurate (and foul way less) with a reduced load and cornmeal filler. I use just enough powder (with cornmeal) to get the ball to the target
If you do leave an air space between the ball and powder you risk bulging or bursting the cylinder. The bullet will act like a bore obstruction with an airspace over the powder.

I am on the SAME boat, just got one in 44, I have head about these pre lubricated "buttons" which one can use after the powder and before the ball. (Like a thick lubricated Patch" looks like a small cotton button.

This is suppose to seal the powder and one no longer needs to crisco the cylinder. Did i get this right?

Yup. The gun will lock up from fouling sooner though as the grease over the ball helps keep fouling soft. Face it, shooting bp is going to be messy.
