New Arrivals: the Holy Grail of Mosin Nagants !!! Finnish M39 Rifles in 7.62x54R

Just Chinese surplus ammo. After shooting a crate and a half I noticed that I will shoot five boxes with consistent great results, then the next box won't shoot as nice.

HAHAHA That's funny.
Check out what my garbage stick shot at 100m a couple days ago. This is my best target to date. Typically at 100m I'm shooting a 1 1/2"-2" group.

Mine came from Weymajack. But he got them from Tradex. It came from the same batch of M39's.

The bolt on my M39 was a little stiff and notchy feeling when I first got it. The first stage on the trigger was a little rough too. With a little use, the trigger is smooth and light now. The bolt is very smooth too.
The gun as a whole feels like a top notch gunsmith gave it a very thorough go over.
Very pleased with my purchase.

Guys please post your targets and your M39's. It will make this thread nice to read through.

i noticed my bolt cycles smooth, but after dry firing it then it becomes a bit tougher to pull it up and cycle it. Have not yet brought it to the range, but I will be shooting it tomorrow for the first time. Hoping no sticky bolt stuff. Cleaned her entirely of the cosmo and oiled up the bolt. Would anyone recommend using loctite anti-seize stuff on the bolt if its sticky? Or generally what are the proper steps to take if your bolt is sticky and becomes hard to cycle?

u've already taken all of the proper steps, of cleaning and oiling the bolt...i always do that and never had any issues with any of my Finns......and i have about 40 of them

Wow! 40 Finns. That's awesome, think you could sell me a couple of original bayos for my M39's?

When you fire the bolt (dry fire) on a ####-on-opening bolt gun (like the Mosin or Mauser), and then open the bolt, it is ALWAYS more difficult than opening a bolt that was not dry fired. This is normal and part of the design.

i always use snap caps/dummy/practice ammo in all my rifles..... was lucky to come upon some VPT 1940's marked 7.62x54r practice ammo a while back, as modern production snap caps are non existant in Canada.... dry firing is frowned upon in my neck of the woods.....;-)......i dbl checked the safes tonite and discovered that only about 30 of my Mosins have Finn/SA marks and that 10 or so were Soviet/Russian...sorry about earlier misprint about 40 Finns..... meant to say 40 mosins

Congrats, you have a post-1893 Chatellerault receiver, likely from around 1894. There was a short period between wen they eliminated the grease hole and some the in 1895 when Chatellerault started putting the dates on the tang.
Once again I made a mistake.
I was having problems with feeding and found the mag follower bent towards the interrupter. Once straightened the feeding problem was gone.

There is a grease hole in the receiver. Evidence of it being there. Does that change the date on the receiver now?

Here are two targets I fired yesterday.

On the first target I was zeroing it in with MFS 185 grs FMJ which I found to be not accurate in this gun. Those are covered with black dots.
Then for fun tried some Russian milsurp [Silver Tip] that I had on hand. 5 shots @ 100yds went into 1.25" group off the bench!
I thought it was a fluke so tried it again.
4 shots went in 1.25" again and I lost one high for a group @ 2" or so.
Can't wait to try it with good bullets and handloads. Damn this thing can shoot!

What was bent? The flat follower the bullets sit on, or the arm that raises the follower up?

The grease hole means it could be anywhere from early 1893 to mid 1894. No way to know for sure, but it's an early Chat receiver.

Great shooting guys! Frig, I may as well concead defeat now. Between my bad eyes n only have Chinese surplus, I'm screwed..but may get a chance to try her out Monday.

I've given up on MOA with open sights a while back. But I can still hit at 300 yds. Aim small miss small...
Check out post #303 dannyp has had good results with chinese ammo

May have to do with MFS 185gn FMJ being a .308 bullet (the ones I've sampled from several boxes anyway - checked some out when first started reloading for my SVT-40) in an ~.310 bore. For comparison Barnaul 174gn 7.62x54r mics out at .310 to .3105, again from those I've sampled. On that note, I finally got around to slugging the barrel on my M39 today, with the following results (as per diagram, courtesy of 7.62x54r net) min .300 max .3135, so it seems to be in spec there. Working up some handloads for it now and hope to get it out to the range later in the week.

Amazon.ca has a couple of different snap caps and dummy rounds, and WSS stocks them too.

I have some 185 grain MFS zinc plated steel case and some 180 grain brass S&B that I will be shooting on Sunday. Will report back with the results. With that being said I am a noob with iron sights lol. Well see how it goes. I cleaned the gun pretty damn well. All I am hoping for is a smooth action, not too worried about shooting tight MOA groups.

I wish we could still get surplus heavy ball somewhere. That would be ideal. Or for that matter some brass cased Igman 180gn.

Well? Range trip tday with this baby. Was good n bad.
Using Chinese surplus, my best grouping was a conservative 1.5 feet at 100m! But I'm the problem, with a bad astigmatism n glasses. Me n my bud are older with bad eyes. but I let a young guy at the range shoot her and he got a 1.5 inch group at 100! And he only fired 4 rounds.
