New bear defence question.... 20g slugs?

Vitals shots don't work reliably in a defense situation on a bear, it's a spinal or head shot only.
As BR stated , if you shoot on a bear running at you at 20yards, he is almost on top of you when he drops.

This I know from experience - lots of it!

It's too bad you don't live in Alberta SCR, We could meet up at Ponoka next year....

This is what I mean by a stopping rifle. In this case it wasn't necessary and the elephant is further away then it looks, about 30 yards. Both walked away unharmed!

I just got my first issue of African Hunter magazine and there is an article (Part 2 of 3) on Classic African Cartridges, in this case the .550 Magnum, .577 Nitro, .585 Nyati and .577 Tyrannosaur , the latter loaded thus: 170 gr of IMR4350 propelling a 750gr solid @ 2480 fps. No mention of the Extra Strength Tylenol for the poor bugger BEHIND the gun, though.

(I will make/add no comment to the original subject of the thread as I have never had to face a hostile bear and only carry a Marlin .44 mag. carbine loaded with Hornady 265gr FP's over H110 "just in case" when I'm in the bush. However, it seems to me that if you can't connect quickly and accurately under pressure, the calibre/guage will be totally irrelevant. Having seen how fast those little buggers can move, I realize I need to get out in the bush and do some serious practice again.)

Hey! this is my thread and I can talk about bears if I want to! :lol:

The topic is, when I am out chasing grouse with a 20g, and I need to deal with a black bear, will a 20g slug put that bear down.

Simple question, never mind about elephants and cape buffalo, or heads and tail shots, who has more experience, or shot more targets etc.

Start your own thread if you don't have an opinion! :wink:

I stand by what I said ealier.
Get real close and put it make one real good , well placed lethal shot to the head, and not in the chestbecause you likrly wonm't have that shot and birdshot won't cut it there.
We're talking "defense" not "Crap he's looking at me and he's only 25 yards away, I'd better whollop him!"

If you have a encounter with a blackie while hunting with your 20 ga, ANYTHING you have in the barrel is better then a rock!!
