New bear defence question.... 20g slugs?

Geez.... a MOD has HIjacked me!

Not at all - er - once i figure out how the slugs do on deer, i can better comment on your question. And maybe the deer will be standing just on the other side of a bear...

Ah forget it - ok i hijacked :) we'll return you to your regularly scheduled discussion :)

I have a 120 win pump, I also used it on the dairy farm for ducks. I still have it. Its a 12. also a fixed full. Never shot slugs good though. Its all over the place. I'm taking the meat cutting course at the college here, anyways this girl there lives just outside of Cash creek. I went there on sunday and found huge mulie sheds. She owns 300 acres there. I did'nt see any deer so I figure they winter there. Have you ever hunted around there?

What, at the culinary arts department at thompson? There's always a need for more cutters i hear :)

Not since i was a kid - we used to do cache creek and boston bar and such. Easy trips for kids.

But if you found sheds, you know where they'll be when the weather gets cold :) Won't be that long from now i'd think before they start moving.

As luck would have it (I was following this thread quite closely, it was good for a laugh) I was out hunting grouse on Sunday with my nice new Browning BSS in 20 gauge.

Well, I was wandering around looking for an ideal place for a new ladder stand I bought, and as I bent down to examine a rather large deer track, I heard a twig snap... as I looked up... I see a black bear not 20 feet from me. I was in a small clearing and he was just inside the bush, probably watching me the whole time I was there.

I stood up and slowly reached for the two 20 gauge slugs I had in my pocket. I craked the gun and slipped them in... When I closed the gun he spun around and took off.

I must say however, I felt a little undergunned. I would have went after him had I had my new .45-70 in my hands, but there was no way I was going searching in the bush with a few 20 gauge slugs. But, as was mentioned before, it was better than nothing.

I just thought I would share this, as I was thinking about this thread while walking home.

Hah - well, glad that's as close as you had to come to finding out how effective they are, but i guess it's like the old saying goes - a slug in the hand is better than a 45-70 in the gun rack. :)

You see! That's what I'm talking about!

But seriously, that's how I started this thread in the first place. It can and does happen, and I just wondered if a 20g slug would do the trick.

So Steyr101 had the ideal opportunity to test the theory out for the rest of us CGN'ers, and he bailed out! :?

Not much of a team player! Gatehouse would've been all over that!

Well, in all honesty I PROBABLY would have went after it, mostly for the thrill but bear season does not open up for another 3 weeks or so in my neck of the woods.

So I did not want to tempt myself with a possible shot knowing that I could not have taken it (legally) if it presented itself.

The fun part is that bear seson is exactly the same as deer season for us, so if he is still around in 3 weeks, I may have to test the 20 gauge theory... from the safety of a tree stand!

Well, ok then, you're off the hook. That is the ONLY legit excuse!

Easy, popcan. :) no one wants to destroy a bear without cause, and i'm sure gatehouse'd be the first to tell you if he can get out of a bear encounter without harming the bear that'd be choice number one (provided he doesn't risk his own fuzzy butt to do it - your life still comes first of course).

A 20 guage at close range is going to put a severe hurtin' on a bear - but if you want to know for sure why not grab a pump 20 g from someone and we'll try it next year during bear season? That'll give plenty of time to pick the best slugs, maybe mount a saddlescope mount on the 20, i can probably kick in a 1-4 scope for it, we'll see how it does.

 Obviously that was all tongue-in-cheek stuff!

No-one is thinking about doing slug studies for CGN while out in the bush with a bear 20' away.

Obvious to you and me - just thought i'd make it obvious to any other 'parties' reading it :)

Seriously tho - i don't see why you couldn't do the spring bear hunt with a 20 and see how it does. I'm pretty sure it'll whack the heck out of 'em if you choose a good one and get relatively close.

Speak for yourself...

Well, you are the exception, GH!

But Foxer is onto something... Maybe next spring you can take us out for a spring bear, and I'll try the 20g slugs myself, with Foxer backing me up with his pump-rifle, :)? ) and you backing us both up with the .338!

I have my 375 H&H, though! :D

PS I owuldn't stand in fornt of Foxer while he had a loaded PUMP rifle in his hands!!

:p

I woulda used that 20 gauge today when I had to prove that smoking and being overweight had pissall to do with getting out of a heap of crap in under 2 seconds

had left the escavator at a bridge project we are doing and decided to walk back the 3/4km to the pick-up and go grab my boss from his job up the road, as I rounded a corner about 300-350 meteres from my machine I looked up to light a smoke and there she was , 2 cubs probably last years in tow trucking right towards me .....let me tell you with no gun, no spray,nothing,.... a fat kid can make tracks  ....I then decided it was best to drive my machine the 3/4 of a km and have some serious steel cage armour around me  ....nice sized grizz though :D
