New Cartridge - the "338 Federal"

It looks to be great cartridge but I am afraid it may be doomed to failure as it dosen't have a belt on it's case, it's case is longer than it is wide, and the word magnum isn't anywhere in it's title! LoL
 
The 358 Win is running along the same line and also uses the 308. I don't know if the 338 Federal breaks new ground. That being said, I am one for new shooting gear, bring it on.

Sounds good. I hope this step, in the opposite direction of magnum-mania, will be a sign of things to come. A return to a little heavier, larger and more modest velocity. Somehow I doubt it.
 
Seems fairly cluey to me.
Everyone kept whinging for a .338 short cartridge.:rolleyes:
It isn't a WSM but with the right bullets it'll be fine, just as the 338-06 is.
Chambered in a less expensive rifle like the Weatherby Vanguard or the Savage Federal may see it really make some money.
Better still, imagine this in a tactical rifle.........:eek: :)

We as a group are losing our love of recoil. Dammit! We are either getting older or getting wiser, or both. But being a dumbsh1t I'll continue to enjoy my 375 H&H.

I've always wondered why the .338 wasn't included in the versatile .308 family of cartridges all these years. Was it due to the .358's popularity? And why did Winchester come out with the .325 rather than .338 version of their WSM series? It's always exciting to see a new cartridge but sometimes ya gotta wonder what the manufacturers are thinking...and for what it's worth, I think Federal's got a winner here...just my .02

Win didn't go with the 338 version of the WSM for two reasons, COL with the common bullet weights (too long for short action rifles) and the fact that they would be competing with thier own 338 which is a steady if not spectacular economic performer. - dan
 
The 308, and all of those cartridges based upon it, are exceptionally efficient, well balanced cartridges. The 338-08 should be no exception.
A cartridge like this has a lot to offer. It will function perfectly in any short action. A 200 grain bullet at around 2550fps (which should be easily achieved) would be very effective on any North American game at practical game ranges. Of course, it would cause a great deal of debate much like the 338-06 vs 35 Whelen question which, apparently, keeps so many up at night! Regards, Bill.

Yep, well kinda. The pattern was a bunch of crappy rounds, until you got to the 338 Federal.
As I said over on GB, that in a BAR would be soooooooooo sweet.
Finally a round worth something.
