Defence Watch





The Canadian Forces is on the market for what it is calling the General Service Pistol or (GSP). It has, through Public Works, put out a price and availability request to industry.



The proposed project will replace all current types of pistols in use with a newer weapon.



The GSP will replace the 9mm Browning High Power (HP) and the 9mm Sig Sauer Model 225 pistol, according to the Canadian Forces.



Public Works wants to hear from industry by Oct. 14.



Here is the schedule after that:



Options Analysed and Requirements refined: December 2011



Definition, buy & try: Jun 12-Mar 15



RFP issued: Summer 2015



Weapon Selected and Contracted awarded: Winter/Spring2015



Start of delivery of new GSP: Fall 2015



Approximately 10,000 pistols will be purchased.



Bidders will be required to enter into an agreement to provide a Technical Data Package or TDP to the government with the understanding that the TDP will be passed to Colt Canada. For national security reasons, the weapons will be produced in Canada by Colt Canada under license; and 3rd line depot-level maintenance and life cycle support can

Also be provided by Colt Canada.



Only pistols chambered for NATO 9 x 19mm ammunition will be considered because Canada is committed to maintaining ammunition interoperability and standardization with its allies and NATO, according to the government.

So... somebody is going to build a factory in Canada to build 10,000 pistols?

It's not like Glock is lacking in production capability.

Glocks factory in the US does 60,000 pistols a month.This "made
in Canada" is going to cost the taxpayer large.It would make sense giving Colt the work if it was there pistol IMO.
 
They could save a lot of effort by just buying new magazines for the BHPs.
The pistols aren't basd at all, but those 70 year old magazines need replacing.

Why do you think that? The report says the "Canadian Forces is on the market for what it is calling the General Service Pistol"

That doesn't mean they have selected the Walther GSP. It means they are calling this equipment their general service pistol, at least for the procurement process. The Browning/Inglis HiPowers they have now are their general service pistol. The report indicates pretty clearly that they haven't completed "Options Analysed and Requirements refined" (target date DEC2011), let alone "Weapon Selected and Contract awarded" (target date 2015).

Maybe going with a made in Canada solution has something to do with export issues from the US. Why ties things up for a couple of years trying to get some special permit from the US Government?

According to the ATF in 2010 there were 2,227,871 pistols manufactured in the US. Only 80,041 of those were exported. To me this sounds like the Americans are not fully realizing the potential of the world market.

This may be more relevant to commercial exports, however Glock in the US supply's most is not all of the LE community in Canada.A LE/MIL agency has few problems getting firearms from the US, there may be some exceptions that are out there,but I believe they are the "exception" and not the rule.
 
What are the odds that the old stuff will be sold to the public? I know the Libs. would never do it, but with the Cons. in power.....

That's the deal killer right there, I understand the "National Security" aspect of actually having production capacity in place, but Glock/Sig/S&W/Ruger/FN et al isn't going to give Colt Canada a production license & TDP for it's product.

Maybe if they were building 250,000 for internal use, but 10K? That's maybe 1-1/2 months production, for a small company.

I understand that when Colt bought Diemaco, FN pulled the TDP for the C6 & C9 ~ does anyone really think they'll happily provide it for this??
