new colt python YIKES

Dunno - I plan to pick one up despite the teething issues. I've always wanted a python (and an Anaconda) to go with my Smith's. It's still gorgeous and I can't imagine the problems are as wide spread as the internet hysteria makes them out to be. I handled a KC recently and the fit and finish are great, trigger was excellent too. If there is an issue I think bullseye will make it right. My only beef is that I wish it came in blue.

I wish they weren’t marked up over US MSRP either. They should be listed for $1999 which is still a fair chunk of change when you type that out. I want one too, but that’s a lot of coin. Have to get the teething problems fixed first. In the meantime I have a 586 coming from SFRC. They had a 20% off sale and free shipping. Plus I’m in BC so only had to pay GST!:ar15:

I watched a video last night with a old colt, and smith shooter.
He was real impressed with the new one.
Some one may have more info on it as I don't remember name, and I have not read the last few posts here.
Only thing I see is it is "new" , not a original.

PERSPECTIVE -

I have a revolver from the 70"s
It was a Budget gun. Cost under 100$ new in box.
Its had many rounds down the pipe. Never sent back for repair.
Timing is still correct.
Cylinder always turns.
Has a Perfect CROWN

consider all these points...then take a look at the Quality & workman ship of guns being sold today for 30 Times that amount. Sad.

$100 in 1970 translates to over $650 in 2020 dollars. My wife paid $600 for an unfired 686 stainless this time last year. Even a new Python at $2000 isn't "30 times that amount". I understand you feel let down, but let's not get carried away here.

Can't wait to get mine.

Give me your best gun you have ever owned that has never failed and I will post a video of it failing in about 10 seconds after I get it. It pretty easy and I will even show how poor the crown is.

Its amazing what you can do off camera to a gun and then post a video.

Colt has said only 6 guns returned and they tried to get some from the guys with videos but for some odd reason they will not return them - except Hickok.

So I say it's mostly BS. Alot of people have a lot of money tied up in old Pythons so they need this to fail and are motivated to ensure it fails. The guns will be fine and this will pass and some will loose money on their investments.

I was thinking along the same lines. a whole lot of drama considering the reality of 6 guns coming back.

Colt took the very brave step of reintroducing the Cobra revolver because they saw some market demand that the other manufacturers did not or could not fill. Or Colt wanted to test the waters to see if a new revolver would sell. Or someone new at Colt finally smartened up the mandarins there.
The Cobra begat the fabulous King Cobra, a truly remarkable remake, but newly re-engineered to make production faster & better.

The success of Colts KC told Colt that the hunger for a new Python might be workable. Colt decided after all these years that it could work, the redesign was feasible & people would buy it. Twice the cost of a comparable S&W 686, the Python drew in the same concept as medium-to-high end custom 1911’s. And these 1911’s sold well. Bring back the Python, price it premium & wait for sales to happen. And sales are happening.

The problem is that we are dealing with the typical Canadian distributon model that adds a amrk up. I would think that Colt acts as it's own distributor in the US, selling directly to retailers. They have thired party distibutors in Canada that have to add their markup before selling to the CDN retailer. I used to have a business in another hobby and the retail price in the US for some products (where the manufacturer distributed/wholesaled themselves) was the same as my wholeseale copst in Canada. It was hard to compete withthe internet at that point.

Whether it's guns, cars or computers, early adopters are always taking a chance. Wait for 6 months and see what the situation is then.

Pythons are way cool and iconic, but in practical terms, a 586 or a 686 with a trigger job will give you just as much and cost a whole lot less. IMHO.

And because the Cobra was a variant of the Detective Special, itself a variant of the Police Positive Special, and the King Cobra was a variant of the Trooper, Colt could bring back the Police Positice Special Fourth Issue and Trooper Mk III by putting a 4.25" heavy barrel with half underlug on both guns.

Ya, MaxMan1....... but I think Colts have abandoned all the previous frames for their newly re-engineered CNC frames.

I cannot attest that the new Colt King Cobra is the same frame as the new Python frame, but it appears similar.
Having had both truly exceptional revolvers in my hand at the 2020 Shot Show, I liked both!
Colts is back!

The New Colt King Cobra is quite a bit smaller than the original Python. I have both. From what I read, the new Python and the Old Python are almost identical in size and feel. Just a little more material in the top strap on the new ones.

The Python frame is closest in size to the L frame S&W's. The new King Cobra is smaller than the S&W K frames but larger than the J Frames.

The King Cobra is not the same as the Python. The originals were two different animals, just as the new ones are still different, just like how the Anaconda was a different model on a larger frame with little or no interchangeability, visually inspired by the Python.

Like I said, the King Cobra was a variant of the Trooper inspired by (but unrelared to) the Python. It was also unrelated to the vanilla Cobra, an aluminum-frame Detective Special, itself a snubbie Police Positive Special with a round butt.

Incidentally, when Colt introduced the fourth issue of the Police Positive in 1977, they also offered the Viper, a Police Positive with the aluminum frame of the Cobra. It was cancelled a year later.
