Looking for a new deer rifle in the 6 lb range. Must be bolt action. Thinking the Kimber 84m in .308 might be the way to go.Must be wood stock (no plastic) Optics will be either a Leupold VXII 2x7 33mm or VXIII 1.75-6 32mm. This will be a close cover gun so it must be lite and quick.Any other suggestions as far as rifle and scope go? Please no Remingtons or 45/70's.Thx.

Well if you are looking for a rifle for close cover, how about one of these:

Ruger model 77 mark II Frontier?

they are avialable in .308 Win, 7mm08 Rem, 260 Rem and .223 Rem.(Im sure you dont want the .223) Good deer smashing rounds.

Aweaver mount comes with the frontier versions and yu can use non ruger rings to barrel mout different optic types "scout" style

It's something that has interested me for awhile, and I might pick one up in the future.

I have that very gun, I have a 6x42 ninkon on mine, it's a pretty nice rig. I would also look at the remingotn 700 mountain rifle LSS.
No Remingtons!

A model 7 with a match barrel installed, in .308 , Gaillard 1-13 twist, 4 groove, sporter fluted, 20 in. topped with a leupold 1.75 x 6 in leupold 2 piece ring mounts.
Doesn't sound like a lite weight, and no Remingtons.

ruger or winchester compact, in 7 mil. I use a win Legendary Lawmen trapper, in 30-30 , with nosler 170's. Have a Lyman peep on it. Very fast , can take the heart out at 75 meters from all but a couple angles. My choice for the thick stuff.

They both are, was just adding what works in heavy cover for me.
A Legendary Trapper Lawman in 30/30 is a bolt gun? The caliber has to be .308.

No, nice rifle, 7-08 over .308 , but both will work fine, I would guess the 7-08 would be more accurate, just a guess , a compact scope would also be nice 2x7.

The reason behind the .308 is my back up gun is a Savage 99 in .308. Like to take 2 guns of the same caliber.

Can see why a light gun is in order, the 99 is a bit of a chore to carry around :) .308 is a fine caliber, lots of hitting power for any game in close.accuracy.... 7-08 just is I think. The barrel will be a bit heavier, will make it shoot a bit better in this weight class of rifle.

Cause it would be a .284 pill launched out of a 308 casing which would in turn mean it would have a flatter trajectory.

Just my guess.
Doesn't meen it's more accurate. It's a deer rifle!
