Hello
I’m new to the forums and would like to share a story and maybe get some input. Before I begin let me say this, when all is said and done, I DO plan on joining a gun club,(just been very busy lately) but that’s not the point, just wondering why? And where is the consistency.
I recently received my RPAL a few months ago. I went to a gun store around my area and purchased a Mossberg 500 SPX and a Glock 22C. While the clerk was on the phone he asked me what gun club I belonged to, I stated that I’m not a member yet, but I plan on joining the Burlington gun club, I heard him tell this to someone on the phone. I took the Mossberg home that day. The next day he phoned me and advised me that my ATT was in to bring the Glock home. I picked it up a week later, and perhaps a week after that my registration papers came in from the RCMP.
Fast forward to yesterday.
I bought a Beretta M9 off another gun nutz on this forum. He called the RCMP for the transfer and called me back with a reference number. I phoned the RCMP and talked to a lady. Here is how the conversation went after verifying who I was.
Lady “What do you plan on using the gun for?”
Me “Target shooting”
Lady “What gun club do you belong to?”
Me “ I plan on joining the Burlington gun club”
Lady (with attitude) “You have to be part of a gun club before I register the gun to you”
Me “ That’s odd, I picked up my Glock a few weeks ago and didn’t have a problem”
Lady (with even more attitude) “and what did you tell them last time!!?”
Me “Same thing I’m telling you this time”
Lady “I’m going to have to transfer your file to the province for review”
Me “ok???”
End of conversation.
What does that mean? Transfer the file to the province for review?
I don’t understand why it was no problem a few weeks ago and now it’s a problem.
From my understanding all I am doing in registering a firearm and according to my little understanding of the firearms act is states and I quote.
“Registration Certificates
Registration certificate
13. A person is not eligible to hold a registration certificate for a firearm unless the person holds a licence authorizing the person to possess that kind of firearm.”
From the RCMP website
Registration
To be able to register a firearm, you require a firearms licence that is valid for that class of firearm. There is no fee to register or transfer a firearm.
Newly Acquired Firearms
If you acquire a firearm from a Canadian source, it must be registered to you before you take possession of it. This will occur as part of the transfer process and must take place any time a firearm of any class changes ownership.
In most cases, the entire process can be completed by calling 1 800 731-4000 and selecting the "transfer" option from the menu of services. Alternatively, fill out form CAFC 681. This is a two-part form that must be completed by both you and the current owner.
I have no problem joining the gun club, and plan on doing it any day from now. But wtf? What is the problem? I have my RPAL. What is wrong with having it at your house legally? Why was the glock allowed? I could not find anywhere in the Firearms act that states you must be part of a gun club to register a firearm.
Thanks for the read and comments are welcome!
PS. I live in Ontario if that matters.
Regards,
