I just got off the phone with Darrel Marsh and the boys at Backcountry Sporting Goods in Fort St. John. I bought their last blued guide gun in 45-70, and it's on it's way back into Darrel's shop for some love before being shipped to me.

It will arrive with the following upgrades:

-Pachmyer Decelerator recoil pad
-Williams firesight front and rear peep sight
-Wild West Bear proof ejector, Happy trigger and oversize lever loop

He's got everything in stock so the rifle should be waiting for me when I get home for Christmas :dancingbanana:

To top it off, my sister is making me a nice custom pine 2-gun rifle rack for Christmas, and the guide gun should look just great up there :D

This is my first step towards getting into big-game hunting rather than just recreational shooting and the odd grouse. Pictures to follow, as soon as she comes in........

Thanks,

This rifle will also represent my first foray into the reloading world, so I'd sure appreciate favorite loads from those of you with lots of expereince reloading 45-70 for these guns.

BTW are the Hornady LeverEvolution bullets available yet? Heck for that matter is the actual loaded ammo available up here yet?

Mikey,

Backcountry had a few in. They don't last long on the shelves up here. I bought the second last one and I'm guessing I had a chance to handle yours as well. The wood is real nice on yours and Daryl does great work, you won't be disappointed.

I feed my Marlin 54grs. of AA-2015 and anything from a 340gr. cast Hollow pt. to my hammer load of 480gr. WFN GC, the latter going 1868 fps.(not for everyone)

I know the cross bolt safety is often a point of derision with these guns. Do most of you just make do or are there some hardware solutions to this weak point?

I actually prefer to have the cross bolt safety....

I use it when I want added safety and I don't when I don't...... :D

I own four Marlins at the moment and not one of them has a cross bolt safety.

Check here
http://ww w.leverguns.com/articles/taylor/crossbolt_safety.htm

I bought four or five of those from Clyde Ludwig and then I started making my own. Just pull the cross bolt safety out of the gun, grind the side of the safety off that sticks out of the action when it is in the fire position, file smooth give it a shot of gun blue and install back in the gun.

MikeyT my guide gun loved the 405 grain flat nosed plain based cast bullets from www.thebulletbarn.com Excellent place to buy hard casts this side of the border and quick shipping.

............It might be just me but the .45-70 was meant to be a flat nosed heavy sluggin bullet. These new fangled bullets from Hornady don't impress me. If you want reliable consistant 250 yard and further accuaracy, buy a bolt gun. The .45-70 is awesome under 250 yards with a good ol fashioned flat nose.

 ... the "Polident Special" load. That should go end to end on just about anything unfortunate enough to get in the way. You got polar bears in Sask. these days?

:p Stuart

I feed both of mine Elmer Keiths load of 53 grains of IMR 3031 or 54 grains of H-4895 behind plain old Remington 405g SP. Getting around 1850fps out of the 22" barrel and I think around 1700 out of the Guide gun(if I remember correctly) and I am very happy with the accuracy out of both.

Ben, what barrel length do you have to get these velocities with the 480gr cast load?

I'm loading 550gr Jae-Bok Young Crater's to 1600fps in my 18.5" 1895GS but would like to push it a bit faster if it's possible. I have absolutely no pressure signs as well as the recoil isn't as heavy as my top 400gr jacketed to 430gr cast loads.

Clyde Ludwigs kits? How did you order it?

I called and spoke to him. I still have to send a money order, so I suppose it's not really ordered until he recieves it, but you get the idea.

Thanks for all the info guys, I'm sure excited about this purchase.
