new gun

I have seen them, I was being polite when I used the term space age. Semiauto rifles are for guys who subsribe to the wall of lead theory.

A couple of reviews of them in magazines both braged about the 2" groups they shot with factory ammo as being "good enough for hunting".

The reviews are mostly on the 1st gen models back in 2003 some things have changed and just because one review says 2'' groups doesnt mean every Benelli shoots that every shooter and every scope is different.

Guns & ammo says:

three-shot groups at the ranch's 100-yard range consistently came in at 1.25 to 1.5 inches
On the other hand, the target distances ranged from 40 yards to 250 yards, and it shot right where I wanted it to every time. I like that in a gun.

I also really liked the R1's relatively light weight (7.25 pounds sans scope) and the fact that it was exceedingly comfortable to shoot for a .30-06. I really never was aware of recoil, and when I whacked that coyote at about 90 yards, I realized, after the fact, that I had a clear visual image through the scope of him slamming down at the bullet's impact, which means that the quick, linear recoil cycle of the Benelli's quick-bleed action was keeping muzzle rise at a minimum.

There is this cool little thing infront of the trigger called a safety.....so your saying you walk around the woods with your action open to the elements and no rounds in the chamber?...sounds like a stupid thing to do doesnt it?

you trust a safety?...sounds like a stupid thing to do doesnt it?

:slap:

we could do this all day man I really dont care anyone who walks around with the action on their gun open in the woods is a retard bottom line. I would also like to see you load a round with a white tail 25yds away with out making a single noise....I know there is no way possable to load the benelli with out making noise so its loaded with the safety on when I hunt.

If I was only taking long 250-300yd shots then yes I could load a round fine but out of the 10 whitetails I have downed the farthest was 85yds which is still to close even the slightest click would send them running.

I often hunt wiht a chambered round, safety on. Muzzle control reminas the most important thing. I do not believe it is an unsafe practice in most situations, although there are times I un chamber, for sure.

It is not practical to attempt to load a semi AFTER spotting game close by.

I hunt with my gun ready to go, safety on, 99% of the time unless I am scouting a little in the truck or something. But if I leave the side of the road, it;s ready to go.I have no idea how you would handle a bear that charges from 50 yards or less, or get that quick shot on a deer about to disappear.

I believe this style has made me a much safer hunter than lots, not the opposite.

Love the Benelli

IMO it depends on the safety. for me, anyway.
something like the Ruger M77 MkII safety i have complete confidence in. in the third position it physically blocks the trigger and catches the cocking piece and locks the bolt. its also pretty impossible to disengage by bumping the safety with your hand, the gun snagging on something, etc. i would have 100% confidence carrying around a Ruger M77 MkII with a round chambered and the safety on.

some other gun models? not so much.

I'm also a believer that hunting with a round in the chamber, safety on, and muzzle control at all times is safe practice. When I am negotiating steep/difficult terrain I take the round out of the chamber and close up the action.

X2 on putting out an R1 in a lighter coyote smacking caliber

the perks of buying an R1 is you can buy other barrels to shoot different calibers so if they do ever chamber it in say .22-250/.243....ect then you just buy the barrel kit and your done no gun smithing nothing just bolts right up.

Clearly you are of the opinion that the Benelli R1 is the be all and end all of hunting rifles. I stand by my previous posts, it will not be as accurate or as reliable as a tuned bolt action rifle.

I have also chambered rounds on deer within 50 yards several times and ended up with venison on the ground. It's not hard at all.

On the switchbarrel thing, I wouldnt buy a TC encore either. Just as ugly, not as good as bolts designed for the purpose they are being used.

wow there are a couple of you that have kind of digressed from the original question. it was never a question of safe hunting and gun carrying techniques, or wether or not you think my gun is pretty. i just want to know good or bad what you think of the purchase, regarding caliber and make and model. i personally like the way it looks. and that is not why i bought it. i bought it because of what i know of benelli owning a super black eagle 2 and the reputation of the 30-06 caliber. and of course the leupold scope. does anyone have a constructive comment on the make and model of gun or the caliber positive or negative it does not matter just it should be informative and based on fact not speculation. thanks

also i love those tc's as well i think they are cool. benelli makes some prety strong claims about accuracy re this gun. time will tell and once i get soem time and get out to the range a few times i will be sure to fill you all in.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, the calibre is a great choice, nothing wrong with a leupold scope, but I wouldn't own a semi for the reasons stated above if you take out my rude remarks. Generally not as accurate, handloading is of no advantage, action's are not as strong as bolt's.

blah blah blah blah..........bolt action guns are the most amazing guns in the world there is nothing better then a bolt action :runaway::runaway: happy :dancingbanana:

P.S. I own Bolt guns and they shoot about the same as the Benelli out to 250yds so I dont know what your obcession is with the Benelli's accuracy.

P.P.S there is no possable way to #### the Benelli with out making noise we are not talking bolt guns here this thread is about the Benelli R1.

sorry about contributing to the hijack

But some people like to voice opinion over facts. People who dont own a Benelli R1 shouldnt even be posting in this thread bacause all they have to talk about is magazine articles and speculation.

Here is the facts the R1 with the scope you have on it should shoot MOA or SUB with the right breathing and no twitch when pulling the trigger.

The .30-06 will kill any game animal in Canada with out issues.

You made the right choice its a beautiful gun that is extreemly reliable, built well and will last you years and years.
