So I hope this question hasn't been asked 1000 times but I go my PAL a month or so ago. I've been shooting lots and hunting once. I'm looking to get a hunting rifle of my own. A few people have suggested getting a 30-06 for a first hunting rifle. I've been looking around and I'm still not sure what a solid choice would be and I'm looking for suggestions. I would need to keep the budget under $1000 with scope. Thank you all in advance.

Hope you have a .22 to learn on.
Or your shoulder and bank account will hurt. And you’ll get a flinch

30.06 is fine and widely available. What are you planning to hunt and where?

.30-06 is a great choice for cartridge, and likely all you'll ever need. .308 or .270 also very versatile.

I would buy a used Tikka T3 or Win M70. Dont be tempted to buy a cheap, new rifle like an Axis or similar. You'll be doing yourself a disservice.

Have a look at Tradex, lots of solid hunting rifles to be found there for less that $1000

Try a few 30/06 if you can, depending on your recoil tolerance, and the rifle design it can be mild to meh...
I can't tell you what your perfect match is, I have some '06 I shoot with plastic recoil pads that are mild, some with big soft pads that are worse.
Probably don't need a 30'06 for BC deer though, so you could scale it down a bit to something less recoiling unless there are caliber restrictions...7-08, 6.5CM, 243win, they will put deer down just as fast as a 30'06.

7mm-08 and .308 Win are great options for a first rifle.
Learn to shoot on paper from various positions so you become confident with your first hunting rifle.
I'd recommend a Browning X-bolt.
Good luck!

The .30-06 is a great all-rounder for big game, so avoid it. One rifle that will do it all just isn't proper Gunnutz, we're about getting lots of guns of various types.

For a 1000 bucks I’d be looking used. Tradex would be a good place to look, as well as the EE. Could most likely find something there. If it’s just for deer, .270win is my favourite caliber. 3006 will take down anything in BC.

As many have pointed out, the "venerable" 30-06 is a good all-round chambering but can be stout. If what you are looking for, rifle-wise, is only for deer, consider something a little bit smaller. 308 Winchester, with it's wide variety of bullet weight choices, is a good consideration. 7mm-08, similar to the 308, is also a good choice although factory bullet choices are fewer.
Pick a rifle that fits you well. Consider contacting your local club and talking with a few of the members. We GunNutz love to talk guns and will often let you try out our rifles. This helps narrow your choices.

Agree with the Nutterz above, that while a 30-06 will do just fine, a 7-08 or 308 would probably be a slightly better fit. And if deer are the biggest you’ll get after, I’d add 243 to the conversation as well.

Of the four, ready availability of factory ammo from highest to lowest will go: 308, 30-06, 243, 7-08. That said, they’re all readily available, but in a pinch, you can likely find the first three at a Walmart at 9:59pm the night before hunting season. Just one of the many considerations.

As for which rifle, some good suggestions above. Keep in mind that the lighter the rifle, the more recoil you’ll feel. So pair that with your cartridge choice: a light recoiling cartridge like 243 is nice in a light weight stock as it’s lighter to lug around with you all day. But a 30-06 in a light stock is going to be punishing on a new shooter. Pain leads to flinches, and flinches lead to misses (or worse, wounded, unrecoverable animals).

When you *apply to the EE you should be able to find a good scope be it a Burris or a Leupold to go on a Weatherby Vangard for just under that thousand dollar limit.
If you are patient, you might even get a set-up for well under the thousand mark.
* you need to apply for access and wait for approval.
Good Hunting.
Rob

For deer, purchase something in the 7mm or below range, avoid magnums. My short list: 7mm08, 7x57, 270Win, 6.5CM, 6.5x55, 260 Rem, 25-06, 257 Bob, 6mm Rem or 243Win. All effective deer cartridges. The first 3 can easily be loaded for heavier game if you wish.

Move fast... change the scope for a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40mm (approx. $200 used).

Rifles have gotten lighter and advice on recoil tolerance has not changed...

A true lightweight 30-06 is a handful. Even rifles that are just lighter than average like the A7, T3 and oft suggested husqvarna 1600 are capable of waking you up.

06 in a 7-8 lb rifle is easy to handle imo. Just something to consider

Another fan of the 270 for basically whatever, especially 130 grain loads on deer

most of my rifles I have were used when I bought them .go to a gunshop and look at there used rifles they have there I'm sure you'll find something nice .

30/06 is a good choice. As some have said 308 is also a very good choice. Lots of bullet weights available for it and fairly easy on the shoulder especially with a light rifle.

A Tikka T3x would be an excellent choice for a rifle. Light, accurate and can be had in a variety of stock options.
