NEW ITEM: Dominion Arms Socom 18

The Dominion Arms Socom 18 is chambered in 7.62x51 Nato.

You can safely shoot 308 in a firearm chambered for 7.62x51.

You can shoot 7.62x51 in a firearm chambered for 308 but it would be unsafe. Ie. It could explode in your hands.

I think you might have the wires crossed a bit on this one. While that's truer for .223 and 5.56x45; In this case .308 is the higher pressure round with a more stringent requirement on headspace, not the other way around. Confusing? Yes but careful to get these the right way around.

Had to call can am a week or two ago so I asked about the next shipment. Said it would be the end of the year.... my guess in this industry that means sometime in the first quarter of 2015, if they make it into Canada at all.

Yeah, it's really sucky, but "they're here when they're" here is typical . Too many variables I guess.

Mine turned out ok. Most of the front sights were to one side, some had angled tops milled incorrectly or to compensate for out of indexed barrels.
Some had uneven bolt lug engagement.
Most were ok though. Canam took back the crappy ones no problem. If you can, show up at a HACS show, you can handle before you buy.

I'll never understand why people continue to buy these things, despite the repeated problems with QC.

I'd rather have three well-made guns than 10 of these things.

(Not trying to upset anyone here, I just legitimately don't get it).

The real deal costs about triple to start. Springfield has been having their own QC problems as well.
If it's a major problem, you can return it. If it's minor, some people find it enjoyable to tinker, accurize, and improve it themselves.
The clinics bring shooters together, and they are informative, and fun.
I have two M14's. A long one, and short. The long one is only Chinese in reciever, and barrel. Everything else is USGI. My SOCOM is stock except for the tri rail forestock, and a red dot. It is a project I build over time.
YMMV.

I too enjoy the tinkering process, and working out the "kinks" so to speak, if they do arise. I have learned tons about the rifle and saved a bit of money doing the work myself. I currently have a full length in a USGI wood stock, with everything else USGI except bolt, receiver, barrel and some select trigger parts. Can't wait to get my hands on a SOCOM model!

on a well made perfect rifle there is nothing to tinker with and customizing often reaps no rewards.
for a great many people, at least those who involve themselves online, these rifles are a tinkerers dream.
they are fun and affordable and I really think the community here ends up just making it a fun gun to own and customize
some take it way too serious and dump craploads of cash on the never ending quest for the perfect m14..... I been there done that and now have more of a 'walter mitty" approach to my m14 addiction.... she's a battle rifle, keep her simple and reliable and well fed :)

On the SOCOM I had was over indexed a huge amount and the rear sight was garbage. On the other hand the scout model I had from Canam was excellent no issues at all.

I need a replacement gas locking ring for my SOCOM. The one that came with my rifle is machined off centre so that the front sight sits on a slanted base. I can't machine it myself. Anyone know if these things are available on the secondary market somewhere?
