The rubber butt pad won't quite fit on the norinco stock. The odd threaded bolt is a touch too short and hard to find a replacement. My solution was to carve down the butt pad.

Its hard to see in the pick but I carved off the inner lip of the butt pad so it was now smooth and then carved a new lip making the butt pad that much shorter. the long bolt just fits.

To fit the rubber butt pad I rethreaded the bottom sling swivel to a comman pitch thread.
I used a longer bolt with the head ground on the sides to make it round instead of hex shaped.
Then cut a slot in the head to fit a flat head screwdriver .

It must have been annoying when you first started but it looks great.

How would you describe the feel of the rifle with that pad installed?

No actually for having done the experiment a NM M1A will outshoot drasticly a Chinese M-14, we are not talking the same tolerances and thight grouping capabilities, even with alot of investment, i doubt you could bring a Socom or 305 the the NM level... Kind of normal... Imagine if i could get my hand on a M25 White Feather...Wow.... JP.

If you could, shoot the Norinco 145 FMJ ammo through both your M305 and NM M1A (with same - same sights) and report back honestly to us how they group. My bet is there will not be any difference.

You will be served si, i did just that last week, take a look, those groups were at 50 yards only range available near the barn for me, same set up, same Casm gen ll scope mount, same Voodoo check rest, same ammo, same distance... Not the same groups obviously, those are not the same tolerances rifle, one worth 5 times more, there no insult, it is just normal... JP.

Taking out the toolkit and swapping the butt pad makes the rifle more muzzle heavy but overall noticeably lighter.

Stripper clip guide goes next for me.

Got mine last week, 3 days earlier than expected.
Rifle looks great. Everything worked fine however mag release, safety and sight adjustment were all very stiff. It gets significantly better with cleanup, break in time and shooting. My op rod is loose and the front sight is canted to the left but function is great.

I do have an issue however.
Firing it will cause the magazine to be pushed out the bottom on an angle so that the next round will not load.
Magazines lock and click in tight.
I have to hold the rifle by the magazine so it does not get kicked out. Either the recoil causes the mag catch to move or the bolt is hitting the mag feed lips. It was dark when I packed the magazines away so I have not looked at them yet. Those are my theories so far.
I have to sort that issue out and all should be well. It is a very fun rifle to shoot.

Not sure if I could justify 5x the cost of the socom for ~2x smaller groups, but it is a great comparison of "bang for the buck" - no pun intended. Thank-you for taking the time to post your results. What do I owe you?

It is important that you know, if you dont change your guide spring for a quality one, the group of the Socom will be larger, it is a mandatory change to have a decent shooting Socom... Cheers. JP.

At 500 yards with the Socom group at 50 yards, you wont hit nothing / at 500 yards with the SA NM M1A group at 50 yards you will still hit a 8 inch gong all the time... This is a huge gap in the fun factor... JP.

Good point. But, it just so happens my two main AR500 gongs are 16"x16", so I should be able to have fun at 500 too - I have a CasmII inbound for my shorty. My Socom will keep the open sights - as a kid I was always shooting open sights, and after a couple decades of laser rangefinders, adjusting parralax, leveling the scope and dialing turrets, etc, I am rediscovering that I really enjoy the simplicity and fun factor of open sights.

I was good with my 3 mines, one had the flash hider stuck ( scratched it a bit) and one had a little crack in the dust cover, very little details, i did not bothered Canam with those small detais, fixed them myself, for the rest they were just fine, and i insist the guide rod on the Socom suck, buy a quality one, big difference... JP.
