New LAR15 magazines malfunction in AR-15

CTCS, but that was before the sh!tstorm in the US. I thought I read recently that Target Sports in Gormley had a bunch in stock but not on their website. If I was hunting for some, that would be the place I would call.

Was at TSC on the weekend, I only saw the USGI floorplates and not the followers on the shelf. But worth a call to see if they have them or not.

I filed all 4 of my new LAR-15 mags down the other day. It was a fairly quick and rough job, but they all functioned flawlessly. I put about 100 rounds downrange spread between the 4 of them, with only one failure to feed. The FTF was probably my fault from not pulling the bolt far enough back with the charging handle causing it to hit the top round fairly lightly. No other issues.

Here is a quick pic of one of the mags after I filed it. Looks like the others people have posted, with more of the follower exposed so the rounds clear the front. Crazy that this is necessary, but a quick and easy fix nonetheless.

Haveing issues with my LAR mags as well, bought mine from wolverine, mine have the plastic bullet shaped thing on top as well. Was causing a double feed almost every time!

I bought LAR15 mags and XCR pistol mags from Wolverine. The LAR15 ones are aluminum, the followers don't seem to move too smoothly and seems to catch the walls. The front lip of the mags needed to be filed down as others pointed out. They seems to be a bit wider and took more effort than should be needed to insert the mag as it would ride along the both left/right walls of the magwell and does not drop free when the mag release is pressed. I used a rubber mallet to fix that problem. The Wolverine XCR pistol mags are better made. They're made of steel and not AL as in the LAR15. They use the orange followers that run a LOT smoother than the gray ones in the LAR15. Rounds seems to feed cleanly without catching the front lip of the magazine.

With the Magpul USGI Ranger plates installed, you will only be able to load 9 rounds! To get around this issue, you'll need to cut approx 1/8" off the legs of the follower. This should be enough space to load the 10th round and have extra space so the mag can be loaded into your rifle with the bolt closed but not enough to load a 11th round.

I think I'd rather buy the Wolverine XCR Pistol mags in the future.

Have you tried filing down the front? Worked well for mine. They are all running flawlessly now. I have the Magpul anti-tilt followers on back order from Brownells, but the mags are working well already.

I have 4 that I bought just after Xmas, but have never used. Took them out today and the rounds were getting hung up on the front as many have said. Quick file job and they slide right out now.

Guess I Will have to file some more. Smoothed the all edges but didnt want to take too much off the front. How much is too much?

Very disappointed with these mags. FTF on DDM5 and my previous Windham. Hopefully filing them down even more will work and not cause other problems. Bought the 10 pack from Qstar.

Thank you CGNers for posting solutions on this topic!

Right now, who sells the best LAR type mags that don't need modification)?

The problem I have with modding the mags is that you then can't return them.

My fear is you get them working on one AR, but if you own more than one rifle, they may still not be reliable on the other(s). By trying to get them working on the others you end up screwing the mag up totally:(. Or you end up having to use certain mags with certain rifles--what a nightmare that would be!

mhen, Have to agree with Trinimon, Robinson XCR's from Wolverine or ? are the best, but you DO have to trim a bit off the follower 'legs', 1/8th of an inch or so, to get that 10th rd. in . I've had NOTHING but problems with the 'other's', so often previously mentioned, trimmed them, filed them, rounded them, even replaced followers with genuine 'Mag-pul's' ! The Robinsons ARE hard to get 'cause EVERYBODY wants them, but work great in my various 'Colt type' AR's, FINALLY ! They were worth the wait !
If you DO 'have a problem' with them and want to return them, I'LL buy 'em from you ! 'Back order' them, you'll get them eventually, I did !

I believe the RRA orange follower angled mags that CanadaAmmo had are pretty solid. Fit 10 rounds in each of the 10 pack I got and all inserted on a closed bolt just fine, though 1 of the mags was a snug fit in my magwell and needed a bit of sanding on the sides to drop free.

I thought it necessary to bring this thread back to life. I recently brought my AR out of the safe after a long rest and realized that it still doesn't feed well with those LAR mags so I ordered up some Magpul followers and I am hoping that is the issue!
