Done went and bought me a new 14 X 40 lathe, made in Taiwan. First new lathe I have ever had and what a sweet machine it is going to be. I'm like a giddy school girl on her first date............Went to town today to get all the right oils to oil her up with, and some brakeclean to wipe all the anti-rust crap off with. She's a little chunky at nearly 2000 lbs, but hey some girls are better heavy than light. New ones of these are made in China but this girl is old stock and made in Taiwan. I talked at length with Ralf Martini this weekend and he highly recommended the Taiwanese lathes, that's what he said he uses. Bought a bunch of tooling as well. so as soon as I get her set in place and rolling I'm going to be rechambering my 700 Custom 458 to the 450 Douglas Express (Ruger Imp 40 deg) Then I have to thread and chamber up my new twist 22-284 barrel..............life is good again !!!:D:D:D:dancingbanana:

What plans do you have for Johnns 358 Norma Mag Whoozsvarna if'n you ever git yer mitts on it.................?

cou:

Nada, "Looky that's a "leave 'er alone" gun..........besides I don't have a 358 NM right now, a 358 Win Mod 7, a 35 Whelen 700 Classic, and 2 - 350 RM in a Mod 7 KS and a Mod 7 MS...........but no 358 NM, odd I know !!!!

I don't know when I will quit and sell my 11" Rockwell. I smithed for years on an old Atlas too... so did Sam Elliott before he bought this Rockwell I have now. I think you will be happy with that heavy pig...

Congrats on the new toy. Now be sure the bed you make for it is nice and solid and will hold the machine all nicely square and aligned. Can't do good work if the bed is twisted by a few thou. There's a bunch of tests you do with test cuts and good dial gauges to get things tweaked just right.

You bettcha BCRider, got laser and is going on 6" concrete floor, will be moved within the next 6 mos to another 6" concrete floor and will laser it all again. Know the drill, trust me.

Yep, and plain ol' Varsol or low odor paint thinner isn't as toxic to our skin and system. Not to mention that these two are cheaper options.

A laser leveler eh? MMmmmmmmm... .nice......

Lasers are all fine and dandy, but just remember that a lathe does not HAVE to be level, it only needs to be straight. After all the levelling is said and done, you still take test cuts, and these are what ultimately decide where you need to tweak your floor anchors. You are going to anchor it to your floor, aren't you ?

Congrats on the new machine.

As to leveling, .0005"/ft master level is the way to go for serious leveling of precision equipment, but smaller machines like that are not a big issue anyhow so long as it ain't rocking around.

Not going to anchor it until it is installed in my new shop, which isn't finished yet. For now it's in my garage and I will not be anchoring it there. I understand all the intricacies of setting a lathe, Rb, and I use the term level to indicate straight and untwisted as well. You are absolutely correct, level isn't relavent, really. So let's use the term TRUE the lathe then.

Congrats on your new piece of equipment. Be sure to use a machinist level or laser for initial machine installation. Will you be grouting her in place?

It's a Busy Bee Craftex...........not the highest end machine I know, but better than the old flat bed Atlas 12 X 36 that I have used for the last 35 years..............

They are a lot of capability for the money. Not to be sneezed at at all!

Best of luck, and have fun!

I like new tools. Old ones too!

Cheers
