New Look SKS (Lots Of Pics)

Picked up a few SKS a while ago, one is in ATI stock, one is awaiting the new Archangel stock, and this one, I was hoping to wear some TimberSmith Monte Carlo clothing...... But seams they are near impossible to find here in Canada in a Left handed model, and if obtainable, they are a small fortune!

Soooo..... I decided to try my hand with refinishing the stock to update the look a little bit, while maintaining its origin for the purist in me as well. I've never sanded or stained a piece of wood in my life, but figured it couldn't be to hard. I think it turned out fairly good considering it was my first attempt, but I'm sure I left lots to ridicule, LOL.

Here are the steps and products I used.....

1> Stripped with furniture stripper
2> Cleaned and Sanded
3> Baked in Oven on low and cleaned several times
4> Sanded with three different grades of paper
5> Applied "Sun Bleached" (near white) colored stain with rag. Let it set up for 7-8 minutes, and wiped excess off.
6> Repeated above "Sun Bleached" stain application, then let stand for 4 hours so it hopefully wouldn't blend with next step.
7> Applied "Ebony"(near black) colored stain with rag. Let it set up for 7-8 minutes, and wiped excess off.
8> Repeated above "Ebony" stain application, and lightly wiped excess to desired shade.
9> Let stains cure for 12 hours, then applied a spray Polyurethane in a "Clear Satin"
10> Let set for 2 hours, and reapplied Polyurethane. I repeated this process several times in order to get a thick durable coat.
