New M305, Q about indexing and a few other things.

Thanks for the post Thomas. Kind of assumed the feed ramps were an important thing to have lined up. Learn something new every day:D

Can someone show me reference material that is telling you guys to use the feed ramps as an indicator for indexing?
I've indexed 100's of these rifles and feedramps were not part of the equation.
No doubt but I have seen people try to correct miss cut vpline ways and move the feed ramp angles to such a degree that it would cause feeding issue's. Hence why I have always been a strong advocate for ditching the iron sights on any barrel that has out of index barrel and replacing it with either the Dlask gas block or even better yet U.F.S. gas system mod. As these will always ensure that;
1) the rifle cycle's properly
2) the rifle iron sights are always useable no matter what distance you are sooting at

Range report

So finally got to fire it off at the range yesterday late afternoon. Shot somewhere between 40-45 yards.

Red is 5 shots of some military surplus stuff my boss gave me, so no idea on the details of it.
Yellow is 5 shots of American Eagle 150gr FMJ .308
Green is 5 shots of Barnaul 145gr FMJ .308

Each square is 1"

Groupings were fired in the order I have listed above. Not the greatest but I'm happy considering it's my first time firing the thing and only second time I've ever been to the range or fired a full rifle cartridge. It's shooting a little to the right so I've moved my front sight to the right to compensate for it, as there's still a very slight tilt to the left if viewed from the rear sights. I'm bringing it to the range again tomorrow, hopefully I can get on the 100yrd line and tighten up the groupings some more.

Norinco flash hider. Everything was oem parts for that trip. Just installed a NEA oversized bolt catch and hoping my usgi spec spring will be in sometime this coming week.

Sorry to threadjack, but just thought since this is what we are talking about might as well just do it here rather then start a new thread. I just got an m14 off someone and was wondering if someone can tell me how mine looks? Im not really sure what to look for so your input would be appreciated. Thanks

Well thats good to know, the pictures are not the greatest. What exactly are we looking at? This gun had the gas system unitized so the front site was relocated and welded back on. You are checking for it being twisted comparted to the reciever? Anyone else have any input on how mine looks?

It's really hard to tell with those pics.the chamber looks over indexed but the pic of the front/rear sight looks underindexed.
I use a dial guage that measures the angle of a table saw blade.
I have an analog one and a digital one.
Put the m305 stripped of stock on a flat even surface such as a table.remove front sight if possible.
Buy that angle guage(analog guage maybe 12-15bucks)or digitalk one(35-40 bucks I think).
Place guage on flat area behind rear sight and on top of post where front sight was removed.
You should have zero angle difference between the 2 areas.
Or use 2 flat sheet metal pieces clamped onto those 2 places and sight down the barrel.if the 2 sheet metals look uneven/tilted,then you
Have an indexing problem.

The guy I bought it off changed the flash hider to an aftermarket one and had the front sight welded onto the the unitized gas spot. So I wont be able to put a peice of metal on the front place where the sight was originally. So how would I go about doing that now? Could I try taking better pictures that might be able to help determine better?

Take some better pics.maybe things will be clear.when you look down the top of the gun does the front sight look tilted?

It looks a little bit off, but it is hard to tell and it was moved and rewelded on so if they didnt get that 100% plumb then that could be the reason it is off. I will try and get some better pics though

Here is a couple pics, I only have a cell phone so they arent very good quality. The gun is leaning a bit to the left but it looks to me the front sight is leaning to the left a little more. Like I said it could be possible that the sight wasnt welded on straight so that makes it hard to determine.

Looks a heck of a lot better than what I started with :D

Forgot to add a pic with my NEA oversized bolt release!

Looks nice dling.
Matt,it looks from there it's underindexed, however,i have a sneaking suspicion your gas cylinder/front sight post is a poor casting.
Can you remove the gas cylinder and see if the cylinder/post is straight?
Maybe the cast part is lop-sided.

So I was looking at it and it looks to me as the front sight may have been welded on crooked. The little set screw in the sight is a slight bit off to that slot in the barrel. What do you guys think?
