That's a pretty good fake grain effect, I'm guessing your not entirely new to fake grain wood finishes..... personally I'd go solid paint or just live with no grain, over fake grain but you've obviously got more patience and talent then me for the fake grain thing.....![]()
My older 336 w has birch furniture. I simply stripped the finish and put 9 coats of tongue oil on it. I don't mind the look. My 45-70 dark has hardwood ( white oak I think) I trued up wood to metal then covered w OD green. It's a hunting rifle not art work. Both shoot just over moa w open sights and have no mechanical issues.
It's been general knowledge that later Marlins need a good look over to ensure you get a decent one...sounds like you intentionally bought a reject and are complaining it doesn't live up to your standards.
I used a torch to make tiger Lines on this one.

After reading this thread I’ll opt for the Henry side gate as my next new LA.
If I wanted a "good" new rifle, it would be a Winchester or henry in 30 30
I just bought a Henry 22 magnum, what a gorgeous rifle. Fantastic fit & finish.
It cycles like the action has roller bearings. Real wood to LOL
Its soooo nice to see some one still cares in the gun industry.
