new marlin 336w thoughts

here is that RIA I was taking about. It had fake wood as well.
after sanding I had NO grain at all.
I put the grain in with a shaggy brush on this one as well.

That's a pretty good fake grain effect, I'm guessing your not entirely new to fake grain wood finishes..... personally I'd go solid paint or just live with no grain, over fake grain but you've obviously got more patience and talent then me for the fake grain thing..... :)

thank you. ya I have been at this for years. I enjoy it. helps pass the long cold winter.

My older 336 w has birch furniture. I simply stripped the finish and put 9 coats of tongue oil on it. I don't mind the look. My 45-70 dark has hardwood ( white oak I think) I trued up wood to metal then covered w OD green. It's a hunting rifle not art work. Both shoot just over moa w open sights and have no mechanical issues.
It's been general knowledge that later Marlins need a good look over to ensure you get a decent one...sounds like you intentionally bought a reject and are complaining it doesn't live up to your standards.

LOL...no not complaining...just bring to light the way things are manufactured today.
I got the rifle at a fair price.......I knew it was going to take a bit of tinkering from the git-go

just exposing manufactures "cost cutting" ways. and yes...they are out to fool you and me out of our hard earned dollars.

Marlin 336 compact about 5 years back. I over estimated my talent to fix a firearm. Under estimated Marlin in there talent to screw up a product.
13 flaws, returned for repair and received a NEW rifle 10 days later mailed to my door.
Not much better, just sold it and cut my losses.

After reading this thread I’ll opt for the Henry side gate as my next new LA.

If I wanted a "good" new rifle, it would be a Winchester or henry in 30 30

I just bought a Henry 22 magnum, what a gorgeous rifle. Fantastic fit & finish.
It cycles like the action has roller bearings. Real wood to LOL
Its soooo nice to see some one still cares in the gun industry.

took my stock off my dark series, its a black texturized type rubber coating over a laminate stock. This is a 2020 model. nice sights but i believe they are xs sights on the dark series, not marlins own.

That flat black finish looks amazing, i know boyds makes 336 stocks, could be nice

That would be nice and strong being laminated.
and yes I really like the black finish on them. way nicer than the 336 W models.
and Nice sites like you said. not crooked, bent or canted

Recently bought a ‘57 Win 94 30-30 and a new Browning BL22 - love ‘em both. Can really feel the quality.

It showed up OK then, Ranger?......Hope you are happy with it.

allrighty then.
well its all back together. Looks and functions very well, like it should.
took it out and ran 5 shots through it.
It cycled just fine, it ejected no issues and I shot at a home made target on cardboard at 50 yards...and was surprised. Its dead accurate.

so after replacing the front site
sanding and polishing up the internals
Cera coating the metal
redoing the furniture
its a good working rifle thats accurate. project done.

Very nice job LR. I have one with a laminated stock. Don’t mind the stock but you sure have me thinking about getting mine ceracoted. Looks great.
