I am intrigued by this new Marlin Lever, essentially this is a 336 30-30 with a 24 inch barrel. Laminate and stainless make this lever look outstanding and with the new Hornady flex-tip ammo it should shoot as well as a .308:cool:

How about this one.... http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/xlr/1895MXLR.aspx
Model 1895MXLR
The power of our 450 Marlin with the performance of the LEVEREVOLUTION technology results in very impressive ballistics. This XLR model has a 4-shot tubular magazine, 24” stainless steel barrel, along with stainless receiver, trigger and lever. Full pistol grip, swivel studs, and Ballard-type rifling precision fluted bolt. Features solid top receiver with side-ejection, adjustable folding semi-bukchorn rear sight, ramp front sight, tapped for scope mount.

More mass marketing. reinventing the wheel. they will sell in droves but I really don;t see any advantage over the tried and true.

that 24" barrel is going to be great fun to drag through the thick....

but i guess if you;re ionly going to your tree stand it won't be so bad :p

sour little fellow today arent we :D , maybe a "KICK" in the knee will cheer you up :p

no, just very ANTI anything that is promoted falsely.

can you inagine shooting a animal up close with one of those soft tipped .458's comming out at 2100fps? be like a giant vmax.

I can Almost see the point in the .30-30, but the ,458 offerings? Useless.

for the few feet of PBR gained I faill to see what all the hype is about.

sure they'll work great on deer. but if it is going to open reliable at 300yrd velocites, I wouldn;t shoot anything bigger with it. goign to be disaster in the 0-80range. wouldn't shoot a moose with an SST would you?

I like the look of the rifle but I doubt some of the ballistic gain claims with these LeverRevolution rounds.

turning a 30-30 into a 308? stop smoking crack Redd

launch a pointy 30-30 bullet @ 2400 fps and its use on game in the field will still be only ideal out to 250 yards. half of what a 308 Win is. ;)

Geez i never thought I would be defending can-openers;)
You can doubt the claims all you want... one of my friends went to the writers conference and shot this new ammo over the chrony and at 300 yards, he says 2400fps was achieved easily through standard barrel lengths.
I will take his word for it... thanks anyway...:p

The Data in all my books lists 165 grain bullets from a 308 with a 24" barrel at 2400 fps...
How do you figure the standard .308 has twice the range.
Here you go watch the videos again on me...;) http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=198

In .30-30, this is just a reintroduction of the old model 336A. That alone makes it worthwhile having. But still, I'm going to wait for a walnut/ blued model to come out. (DROOL)

Agreed, I love the look of Stainless and Wood. I should have bought one of those Stainless/Wood Model 70's (left hand) when they were available.

That said, im not quite sure I see the point to this creation. Yes, we are going though a lever revolution these days, with the stainless levers in .450 and .45-70 turning everyone on. But I don't see the point of this longer barrel at the ranges this gun will be used at. To me, an open sighted lever in a big bore (and even the .30-30) is a bush gun, and I dont think I would ever voluntarily carry one where a shot could be had that was over 100-150 yards... my MAX for open sights.

For this to realize it;s true potential, a scope would be needed... and that's just rediculous!

Marlin made a 336 ER for a very short time in the 70s I believe. ER then stood for extra range. This rifle was in .356 winchester with a 24" barrel and was dropped like a hot potatoe as it didn't sell enough I guess, for reasons beyond me. That little combo was nipping at the heals of the .358 Winchester let alone the .308 with flat bullets

I've said this many times before; why oh why oh why doesn't Marlin give that run another attempt. And now that they're trying out long barrels again it would be a great time to start. Especially if they could get Hornaday to make some appropriate Lever Rev. pointy bullets...

During load developement on a Tikka 595 in .308 Win we were getting 2600fps out of the 22" barrel with 180gr bullets. Actually I thing it is 22.X", but I don't have it here to measure. Another Tikka 595 was getting over 2700 with 168gr bullets. I just can't see how you can compare that to a 30-30. In the Nosler reloading manual top velocities for the .308 with a 24" barrel are 2718fps with the 180gr and 2820fps with the 165gr. Where are you seeing only 2400fps with a 24" barrel? I think you are comparing apples to oranges.
