I've been told (and heard) that you guys have a fair amount of gun crime. Is that true?

No.

On the other hand, I have heard that since your current gun laws were put in place, your violent crime has increased. :D

Welcome to the boards.

Definitely. We're having more gang-related shootings/attacks than we ever did before. Home invasions are also common since we don't have a right to self-defence with a firearm. Self-defence in general is a grey area here. Our weak justice system doesn't help much either.

Tried toast and a cracker, just not my thing. I work at an Anglo owned mine so we have lots or Australians here trying to push that stuff. Its definitely an acquired taste.

Yep. I've only met one foreigner that liked it. The majority of them gagged. :D

Welcome aboard. I love this site!
My uncle just flew back to Oz,
But not before he got some range time!
Its a shame about the gunlaws in Austrailia,
My uncle told me, and I did some research,
if we're not careful it could happen here!

Welcome! Spent a winter backpacking Oz a few years ago... good times... fantastic weather and beaches...

Although I must admit Oz has Canada beat in the nanny state department, which blew my mind a little because I thought we were pretty bad here. Have they managed to ban "glass" yet there? They seemed to have moved on from banning guns to banning glass at the time I was there.

It's a shame how regulated we've become. Our gun laws certainly aren't stopping criminals. While in New Zealand, who have lenient firearms laws (like yours), they have very few shootings, robberies etc. compared to us. I agree in regulation and restrictions, but we take it too far.

They're trying to as "glassing" seems to be becoming a national sport here.

Welcome to the forum. I've got a bit of an Australian thing going, returning in August for the 4th time in as many years. Met up with Kombie on my first trip down.

I like the hunting up in the NT, and will be bringing my own rifles along just like every time before. The temporary importation and non-resident gun license is easy to get, but takes a bit of time. I don't know how hard it is to bring them in permanently but know that it is done quite often. One of these years I'm going to leave a couple there permanently, registered to a friend in Darwin just to avoid airline hassles and fees.

I am trying in vain to remember a single person that I know that has ever been a victim of a gun crime. In fifty years of being surrounded by guns I can't think of a single one.

Thanks. I was wrong about importing firearms in general. I remember now that semi-automatics are very hard to import into the country, but firearms that fall under the A/B license category are not. Apparently over 40,000 firearms are imported every year.

I was thinking of going to Darwin sometime this year as I'm never been before. When were you last here?

My son and I were there last August hunting pigs, ferals, buffalo and a big scrubber. Its turned into an annual trip.

I like the sheer size and emptiness of people of the outback. It reminds me of home. Once you get past the different accents, phrases, driving on the wrong side of the road and vegemite the Aussies are very much like us. The amount of people who have helped me for no reason other than shared hunting enthusiasm is staggering.
