Hello CGN'ers,

I just unboxed my new mossberg 590A1 SPX and dissembled to give a good cleaning. to my horror the barrel had A LOT of rust and discoloration in the barrel. most it located about 5cm into the rear of the barrel. I have given it a good cleaning and it is well oiled but still has rust stains. This is my first shotgun and my question is will it be alright to continue using it or should it be sent back?

Thanks

Wow, that's a lot of rust for a new gun. Curious as to what the experienced guys here would recommend. Steel wool? Send it back?

I would try taking a wire brush to it.. Probably the 10ga Copper brushes you can find in the cleaning kits, with some WD-40.. or Kerosine..

If that doesn't work... Try a stainless steel brush. If that doesn't get it out... Send it back.

As long as it's just SURFACE rust... Then it shouldn't harm anything.. But if it's pitted even in the slightest bit, Send it back without question.

Send it back, don't touch it at all.

When you buy a new gun, that is inexcusable. If your dealer gives you a problem and won't replace the gun, only at that point, please let the rest of us know, so we never do business there. I hope your effort to clean up the gun doesn't void your ability to return the gun.

First thing to do when buying online: Ensure the dealer marks on the package "DO NOT DOOR DROP." Given winter conditions, you don't need your new gun frozen outside at your door, and obviously, you don't want guns left in a box on your doorstep by Canada Post. It has happened to me, and it is not cool. Hell, my $500 (after duty) camo winter coat from Cabellas was door dropped, though Canada Post was good, lol, they his the box behind the blade of a snow shovel.

Also, inspect your new gun immediately for any defects. A good online dealer, like any here, such as Wolverine Supplies, will remind you in a written note to inspect the gun or furniture in the case of wood stocks on rifles or shotguns for any defect, and to return it immediately if there is an issue.

Cheers, & good luck.

does anyone here think it is factory preservative that has stained the barrel? i have tried all my cleaners and a wire brush with not much success. i can not see pitting and i am starting to think it is not rust. what worries me most is its in the barrel where the cartridge expands

Well I took my 590A1 out of the safe out of curiosity and it looked like I had rust as well in my barrel but nothing close to what's in the OP's pic. Scared the crap outta me cause I don't recollect seeing it there before unless I never paid much attention to it. I cleaned it out with a wire brush for the most part. Still looks like it has a little bit that won't come off. It looks like what old dried out oil looks like. Had a little bit in the front end of my barrel and also noticed very minor rust around the front sight. I quickly checked my other firearms for rust thinking if it's on one gun then all the others might be rusting too, they were fine. Maybe the mossy are more prone to rusting. Who knows? I'll keep an eye on it to see if it's gets worst.

Wow - yeah mine has some brown stains just near the chamber end.. but definitely not dry rust like that. I think mossberg needs to dip their barrels in heavy oil as they come off the line. Even my 535 barrels all come with a little rust stain here or there... Its certainly still shootable, the frustrating part is you expect a nice new shiny gun and it looks like that out of the box - #mossbergfail

If there is pitting it will cause extraction issues. I would have a good look and if its all surface rust then just polish it with steel wool and move on. Its a 590, not some ### limp wristed sissy gun. You should be able to throw a handful of mud in it, leave it outside for 3 weeks and still put a case of shells through it without a hiccup. A .45 cal bore brush wrapped in steel wool will get the rust out. Do not use oil until the rust is gone, it creates a bit of a grinding compound. Dry steel wool at low speed, check often and wipe out any powdered rust each time. Mossberg uses a generic preserving oil with a tell-tale smell to it. I havent seen it stain steel at all, I'm geussing they havent been oiling the bores.

Guess it's a common occurrence with Mossy 590A1 barrels?

I like my mossberg's have a 535 and 590A1. The 535 came with F#$ked up choke threads, got that barrel replaced by epps no problem. Additionally, bought a rifled barrel for the 535 and then the 590A1. EVERY barrel has had some form of rust or staining in the bore/chamber area OUT OF THE BOX!? Next shotgun will likely be a over/under or an 870, I know oil is pricey these days but really? Can't afford a little squirt down every barrel coming off the line? lol

I would send it back pronto.

I suppose the other option is to have the chamber polished. But for a brand new gun? forget that.

I love my 590A1SPX, built like a tank. That kind of rubbish initial quality is surprising.

I'm sure it is a disappointing option, but you need to box it back up and get warranty support for that.

+1, I wouldn't be using steel wool on the gun either. One thing to have to deal with rust on an old gun but brand new????? Turn it back to the dealer and get them to replace the gun.

Take Care

Bob

ok guys so the general Consensus is this is not a normal amount and i should send it back? i can deal with staining but it almost appears like its rust under the surface?

Hey guys, I just received mine today (M590A1 SPX) from the same dealer. I am a newbie looking for advice. This is my first shotgun and it looks similar? Is this normal? Also does the M590 A1 stamp looked painted over on everyones? Maybe i'm just being paranoid.

Thanks in advance:
