New Off Road Vehicle Laws in BC

Sorry to hear the bureaucracy is finding it's way to you.

Here on the east coast we have been getting shafted for years. OHV's have had to be licensed for as long as I can recall (25+ years). 15% sales tax on them even used ones. Have to be insured, everyone has to wear helmets, no exceptions. Plates are $10 and change+ a $40 trail fee if riding off private land ( show me the money, or rather show me where the money was spent!)

Drive on the side of the road and yer gettin a ticket. Ticket for no plates is $400.

DNR is famous for blocking roads on rally and checking plates and jumping out in front to stop you on trails, giving very little time to stop. Hope your brakes are good or it's assaulting an officer. Some old railbeds have 20 km/h limits and they have been known to use radar guns.

Good times!

No they aren't, but what you said is telling.

"as soon as I pulled into the gas station here is a cop sitting there playing on the computer lol
Right away I figure oh #### am I in trouble now"

It shouldn't be like that. The first feeling you get when you see a cop shouldn't be fear of prosecution even if you know you've done nothing wrong, but I think almost any person you ask these days would say yep that's how I feel when a cop pulls up beside me at a red light.

I think like the feeling should be "Oh nice a cop, now I know nothing bad can happen within 500 meters of this person" but unfortunately anything bad that might happen will probably be a result of interacting with them.

I reacted the way I did was because I was blatantly breaking so many laws fortunately the officer realize it could not be helped and look the other way
If it happened at home I would've been put in handcuffs and hold to The police station and charged

But you were just trying to feed yourself, see what I'm saying? Whether something is legal or illegal doesn't always make it right or wrong and that is likely how the officer felt to.

if this goes through , I really doubt it will be enforced with any regularity once a guy gets a hour or 2 north of Kamloops .....

mind you , if being plated and insured will allow a guy to legally drive on the side of a road like they do in alberta ( from what I have been told ) , it might not be a bad thng .

Another problem that this will solve is all the stolen quads going to BC for resale.

When I worked in forestry theft of quads was bad, we lost 2 in one year, stolen our of the back of work trucks.

now its going to be hard to register a stolen quad.

It was and emergency I had no choice or options
If I would've been on Haida Gwaii I would've been charge for sure
With the new changes you guys are going to see the same heavy-handed treatment spread across northern BC and work its way down south
Myself I am going to comply I don't like it but I have no choice

It's not law yet...........but if it does go through, and you bought a used quad a few years ago and now you have to register it there are going to be a lot of people informed that they are in possession of stolen property once the serial numbers are run in the data base.......that's just my thought on this.......

not an A hole tax, but I speak from personal experience just like others here do.

I haven't had a traffic ticket in many years and less than I can count on one hand in my entire driving career. I treat others the way I expect to be treated which seems to be a trait lost on crown corporations and crown employees that I am forced to have interactions with or those who's interactions are forced upon me.

Well which is it? You have barely received any tickets your entire driving career or you have personal experience? The two contradict each other.

How is it lost? According to your own post you've had pretty much no interaction with the people you claim don't treat others respectfully?

Ahhh you've heard from others! So let's do some analysis here. An oil/gas town has 20,000 files a year not including tickets. A mid sized LMD detachment around 40,000. Surrey must be around 150,00 a year. If you were to add up all the calls, stops etc it's a fairly huge number. If what you alledged was even remotely correct then well frankly it would have been an epidemic problem. You'd be able to fill a telephone book thick newspaper every day! Yet that's not the case.

Your post reads as biased and more than a bit hypocritical.

Let's face it no one likes tickets or being told they can't do something. Me included but let's keep the anti police hyperbole down to a dull roar.

Think again, snowmobiles have had to be licenced in BC for at least the last 35 years. I don't think it even slowed down the theft rate.
And as for boats, I bought a used one from a dealer and when I went to register it in my name there was no record of the boat or the numbers although both are now registered to me.
I don't see registration and licencing helping anymore with ATVs than it has with firearms.

I received a warning for that myself from the monitor and rightfully so
I was caught off guard and just reacted with out thinking I never have policeman com to my door unless it's concerning the me riding my Rokon

Yup afraid so. Also watch for all the "great deals" on craig's list to start popping up.

Keep in mind it won't end this. Only the honest will get stung. Stolen trailers for instance still happens and if I see one more bogus "ubuilt" that is clearly not I'm going to be sick. Never buy anything registered as "ubuilt" that clearly isn't. Also insist on some indications of actual ownership. Last if the serial number is missing then run!! Third consider calling in a check on the serial number if there is one.

I bought my ATV new back in 2007. I didn't want to get scammed, get a wrecked machine or find out it was stolen. Cheaper in the long run. Caveat emptor!!

I can dig up the file number for 3 rifles I had to turn over during the registry that where reported stolen long before.........
I think it's a little to early to say it can't or won't happen.......

I wonder how these new changes will affect me riding my Rokon they are important as a two wheeled tractor
the main rreasons why I went with a Rokon is it doesn't rip up the ground and it is Farmer friendly

I forgot these bikes are registered as tractors I wanted to put lights on it so I could legally drive it down the road but in order to do that they it would I would had to be safety inspected first when they came into Canada
HAAHAA why am I worried I own a 2 Wheel drive motertracter I don't think these new rules apply to tractors LOL sorry guys !

Besides having a quad that is plated and insured, I have an Argo for which never ever had a ownership assigned to it right from the factory. I have zero paper work on it as I bought it used off a friend of mine who only had an original bill of sale form the dealer, the same as buying a lawn mower. Anybody have any info on how Argo's are treated in the eyes on the law on crown land in Ontario. An Argo is basically a big plastic wash tub with 8 wheels and a motor in it.

Wonder how the authorities would view a riding lawn mower on crown land? One does get tired of being regulated and taxed to death in the disguise of public safety.

You have to register TRACTORS out there? Not in Ontario, slow moving vehicle sign and your good to go. No plate, insurance or drivers licence needed, thank god. Lights only needed at night.

I have barely any traffic tickets, I posted that to show that I am not some "A hole" as you put it that deserves the attention he is getting when on the road. I have had many distatstefull interactions that have not resulted in an tickets, citations or criminal charges......Is that not experience?

where did I say that?

Personal experience what "others"?

That is your opinion

exactly, the post you quoted mentions crown corporations and crown employees. This thread is about new ICBC policy in BC, The police just happen to enforce these policies for ICBC and ICBC collects on behalf of the police for the citations they write.

You choose to pick on one end of the spectrum and cry foul, I have had many more bad interactions than good with both (crown corporations and employees that relate to this thread). Would you consider that normal? Is that the way it should be?. I have no history that should warrant such treatment yet it still happens? Sorry, I should stop posting my experiences because it will be turned into me being called anti police

If ever a like button was needed it would be for this post.

,
I have inquired about the tractor status on my motorcycle with ICBC and it is recognized as a tractor in Canada!
there is a special plate ICBC issues for tractors on the road
Tractors have to Signal lights and are restricted two roads under 50 km an hour
The same plates can be applied in remote areas such as islands (convenient in my case)
The only reason why I haven't plates my tractor is I haven't found out whether or not Rokon had ever had their motorcycles safety inspected in Canada
I thought it would be pretty cool for going uptown to check the mail haahaa
I wouldn't need a motorcycle license just a regular class five
The best for last no helmet law

I'll call the dealership and inquire about the in safety inspection tomorrow morning
With some luck I will have this bad boy on the road legally
