The Norinco 1911A1's are very good pistols for the cash.
You can get a used one for way less than $500 (actually closer to $250 on the EE for some of them) then drop the other $250 on the cheapest .45 ACP you can buy.
Great gun but ammo is cost prohibitive unless you start reloading.

A good .22 would be a Ruger MKIII or 22/45. If you're in the market for a 1911 check out SAM 1911's (Shooters Arms Manufacturing) as they have plenty of different styles in both 9mm and .45. Only thing to note is that SAM's are built tight rather than loose so you may need to do light polishing work to get it how you like. I have a SAM Stainless 9mm and a SAM Thunderbolt .45 and love them both.

If you don't mind going over your budget a little bit a M&W M&P Range Kit in 9mm comes with everything you need including holsters and mag pouches.

^^^^+1 This Rugers, and Sam's are a great start
 
Can-am sells the dominion arms p762, it's a clone of the sig 226 but it's chambered in the affordable 7.62x25 that you can get by the crate
 
SIG P250 I believe is listed at Bullseye London for $499. It is a D/A action only semi auto pistol in 9mm. It's a good way to train your trigger technique.
 
You'll spend a little more than $500, but an M&P Range kit is pretty good bang for your buck. I prefer the ergonomics over the Glock but they're pretty comparable pistols.
