New production 44 Automag on Forgotten Weapons

Good videos. I've always liked his reviews.

Kent Lomont set up a number of wildcat versions for long range shooting but not sure if it was for official Silhouette. He did a few articles in GunDigests. Looks like some of the new versions are definitely seeing use for hunting. Too bad we won't see many new versions up here.

Friend of mine with expensive taste had one back in the 80's. We never hunted with it, but I shot it at the silhouette range a few times. Soaked up recoil better than my S&W 29 did, but making ammo was a pain. - dan

Starline makes brass these days so no more cutting down .308/.30-06. If it's legally possible in the future I plan on buying a new Automag.

Super cool guns. Too spendy for my wallet, but if I could afford it I'd totally have an Automag III, that's the one in 30carbine.

I got to handle them at the last SHOT Show I attended in 2020. They are beautifully made guns and if they have overcome the problems of the originals they will probably sell reasonably well. They are pricey but the Americans don't mind spending money on guns they want that work.

If you couldn't find the relatively rare and expensive factory ammunition you had to cut down .308/.30-06 and ream out the inside to make AMP brass.

This. It wasn't the worst brass modification I ever saw, but it was slow and annoying. Then you chased the damn things as you didn't want to lose them. I still had the dies and tools up to about 5 years back, then sold them on. - dan

I've had one since '76, and like Dan says, the headache then was having to make brass, about 20 minutes per. And our range here is either sand or snow, and losing brass was a major concern. Otherwise it shot well enough to try silhouettes with it.
Nowadays, getting too old and looking at the new law, I'm debating if I really need it just to irk Trudeau and end up with it going to the chop saws!

I thought you could just chop 308 casings and load them with 44 without much more than chamfering.

Long time ago I made some 45-08 cases that involved a bit of reaming but I always thought the 44 didn't need it.

Well, I've never shot or loaded for the 44AM so there you go!

when I was a teenager flipping thru gun magazines, this was my favorite handgun and wanted one so bad LOL
Fortunately for me the first handgun I ever handled was a 1911 and right there on the spot I forgot all about the 44 automag.
