New Quest: Getting My PAL!

Dana_0_o - Thank you, was planning to take her down range but figure I'll go down first. I'm afraid to take her on her first trip there and see lots of longhaired tattooed bearded muscle guys shooting .50 Browning MGs (not that I have anything against any of the above, but to a 24 year young Asian girl that's enough to freak the heck outta her).

Most of the people shooting .50 Browning MGs are much older people ( Theyre like 5-8K and 10$ a pop is much so I doubt you will see those guns out unless its HUGE event ) Double up on the ear pro ( soft foam and good muffs )... And nothing wrong with long hair bearded tattoo people. If what people look like freaks her out then you really got your hand full.

I got my card guys!! Thank you all so much!!

Excellent!
Since you like milsurps, think about collecting a theme and researching the origins.
Most people here collect Soviet stuff: Mosins, SVTs, Tokarevs, early SKSs, that kind of thing...because it won't break the bank in terms of guns and ammo. The most expensive milsurp collection is the US stuff. Try finding a M1 Garand or carbine or a Springfield 1903!
Join a club asap so you can shoot your restricteds when you get one! Make sure you get at least a cheap restricted like a Tokarev, We need another thorn in the side of the Libs!

Robert Nicholson - Thank you sir! I actually do have a buy list, will be posting in the EE section soon. Also please don't mind me appearing often on the EE Surplus Rifles section from now on :) Thank you for the kind words and support Rob!

RobertMcC - Ah I see, well I do sincerely hope I can meet the .50 wielding baddies personally, it'd be a dream come true for me. Well my wife (got married last month) doesn't judge people by appearance or any stereotypes. She is just not used to loud noises, wish that'll change after I take her down the range a few times.

Still alive - Thanks for the suggestions, duly noted! I'll be joining the club by Silvercore first thing tomorrow. I'm thinking of starting my collection with a WWII German Kar98k, with specs I've always had in mind (will be posting them in the Milsurp and EE sections soon). But if that costs too much I'll complete my WWII reenactment gear with a M91/30. I bought a whole authentic set of WWII Russian uniform, greatcoat and ushanka and all, owned by my friend's grandfather who served in Sevastopol during the 40s. Oh yeah that brings my big question, would be it weird (or in violation of any laws) to wear WWII Russian uniform down the range to fire a M91/30? Cheers buddy!

John Deer - Thank you John, I think so too, thanks for the warm welcome!!

!!

A German collection will be quite small. The Mauser being the cheapest you can get relatively easily. The next will be the P-38. There is the modern .22 version of the StG.44 you can now get. C-96, Lugers, PPs, PPKs, MP-38/40 and MG-42s are all either prohib, or ultra expensive or both!
We still live in a free country...how long? i don't know but till then, wear whatever you want to the range! You will either make friends or get weird looks! It will be winter soon. The Russian gear won't look out of place!
How about a Japanese milsurp collection?

Yeah relax man you will be obviously uptight and nervous for your test but you'll do fine as long as you don't drop something. As for wives/gfs whatever, take it slowly. If she has some kind of noise aversion, don't take her to the range the day you come home with your shiny whatever or cosmoline soaked sks (with a 1000 rounds)!!!

Still alive - Ohhh I misunderstood your definition of a collection. What I meant to say is that I wanted to have a WWII rifle collection, starting with a Kar98k. I do actually wanted to start with Arisaka T38 and T99, but I'm guessing these are harder to come by? A T99 is actually on the top of my list, while the 98k a close second. Do you think there are T99 owners willing to part with this particular rifle?

VanIsleCam - Yes you're absolutely right, I should take her down the range only if she's willing and with a pair of high performance ear muffs! I'm hoping to start with bolt action rifles, semi-autos aren't really my thing... yet :)

Then why you make the ref about long hair bearded tattoo muscle men then?

Hi RobertMcC, no disrespect to the referenced type, sorry if I've offended anyone! My wife is from Asia, who spent all her life in the far east, working a quiet office job before moving to Canada because of me. Thus I was a bit concerned how she'd react meeting different types of people. But I think I'm the one who is over concerned here, she should be fine :)

The best way to find out about the T99 is to put up a WTB ad on the EE. If you ever buy a Nambu pistol, make sure you read up about the external sear!

Hi good fellows! I will officially begin applying for my PAL today! You guys have no idea how hard this decision came to. Well the decision is easy, but convincing my other half is the difficult part, mission-impossible difficulty if I may.

After days of negotiation (weeks if I include the dinner table probing talks), my fiancée finally agreed to let me proceed getting my PAL last night! Her concern was that because we're planning to have a baby in a few years, she doesn't want them hurt by firearm mishaps at home. She felt better when I told her a gun safe is required for gun owners; she thought firearms are stored under beds and/or in closets with ammunition.

So since I live in Delta, BC, I’m going to take the CFSC/CRFSC at Silvercore, and I do have a few questions:

1. Is Silvercore a good place for the Safety Courses? Do you guys recommend it? I did some online homework and they look professional and fun. Has anyone here taken courses offered by Silvercore? How was it?
2. Do I only have to bring government issued IDs and writing material to the courses? I spoke on the phone with a nice lady, Amber, from Silvercore, and that’s all I’m told to bring. Just want to make sure because I don’t want to miss bringing anything to the courses.
3. How should I prepare for the courses? Should I pre-study? And if so, where can I find the material? I found some guides on the internet, but they’re a few years old, are these still the material taught today?
4. Are the exams difficult? Besides what’s learned from the two day course, are there additional material I should study? If I do not pass the exams, do I have to do the courses all over again?
5. I’ll be going to the courses next weekend, what should I do in the meantime?

Thank you guys for reading, that’s all the questions I have for now. If you have the time and knowledge, please help answer a few of my noob questions? Thanks in advance!

good luck bro...have fun and enjoy the course ...lol

:wave:Glad to see so much enthusiasm! Don't worry about offending anyone with your normal comments, we are big boys.
I would love to see someone show up at the range I go to, wearing an old Russian army uniform.

Still alive - Thank you, will do now! And a read up on external sear, got it, many thanks sir! :)

j2kool - Did the course a few months back, loved it and the guys there! Got my card and now looking for my first purchase!

Robert Nicholson - Thank you Robert, had always been a war buff since I was small (elementary school). Now I can own a piece of history, how cool is that?! :) I live in Delta, BC, would be wearing just that soon! :) Are you from Okanogan? It's beautiful there, been there, loved it!

Yes, I'm in the Okanogan where it is pleasant most of the time. Are you going to get a .22 for training on (if you are inexperienced) first? Your wife will
need to shoot .22 at first in order to enjoy shooting. The Mosin is for experienced shooters who get a kick out of being kicked by their rifle.
Please come and post some questions or add your opinions to some of the disscussions in the Red Rifle forum.

Hi Robert, yes a .22 is on my list too, but for my wife. I'm the kind you mentioned who liked being kicked by my rifle, but I'm not experienced :( Oh and an honor to join you in the Red Rifles section!
