Finally got my reloading bench set up.

Started off with just this.

To this and the rifle I'm going to be reloading for. ;D

To actually trying to resize, de-prime, trim, and tumble brass.

I know I shouldn't be reloading in a carpeted area but this is unavoidable for me. I'm going to pick up some of those office mats and put them under and around the reloading bench.

So my question is about ordering gun powder off the internet. I don't have any gun powder to actually start reloading. My brother was going to the city so I asked him to pick me up either SR 4759, Reloader 15, or IMR 4064. These are the lightest loads in my reloading manual for the .270 Winchester and figured I would start with light, low velocity loads and then after being more confident, Id move up to the heavier, high velocity, compressed loads. However, my brother could not find a store that sells either one of those powders. One guy told my brother that ordering powder is difficult because no one wants to ship it because its dangerous goods. I feel that this doesn't make a lick of sense since you can order, primed, ready to fire, and #### tons of it, loaded ammunition. So my question is, Is there any special regulations for ordering gun powder online?

Powder can only be transported by certain carriers and there will be a hazmat fee. This only ads to the cost, but is not difficult. Most shops will ship it to you. however if you are in Vancouver there are several sponsor businesses in the area that should be able to help you. If no luck there, you can try www.higginsonpowders.com. they will ship it.

Good thing your brother choked - those powders are too fast for the 270. Pick up a powder of the proper speed (4831, 4350, Re19, etc) and start at min load. The load charts have the optimal powders at the top of the list, as far as speed is concerned.

This ^. And that's H-4831 and IMR-4350 I believe were the intended recommendations here. 'Re' is 'Reloader' by Alliant. I would try Re17 as well.

You usually need to prove you are 18+ to order powder for legal reasons. Some retailers will okay it as long as you pay with a credit card and the name matches the shipping name. Others will require you to send them a scan/photo of your drivers license or other government issued ID.

If you're on Vancouver island I'd just find someone that sells it locally. Unless you are ordering large quantities the hazmat fee often makes it not worth it.

My reloading manual states, for novice handloaders, to start with the basic low velocity loads at the bottom of the reloading table which are SR 4759 (reduced load), Reloader 15, and IMR 4064. The manual also states that they don't include a burning rate chart in the manual simply because they know its going to be miss used. I'm just going off of published data that is guaranteed by Speer. The manual also marks loads that require a magnum primer and none of the above have the * mark for magnum primer.

To be able to get to the nearest city to buy powder, it costs me $100 to get there and back just in gas. Now to add that the nearest city with stores that do have powder have a poor selection.

That bench is just for now. I got it for free. The only thing that really sucks about the table is the top. The rest is a full metal frame that is a half inch thick. I'm in the process of building a much better reloading bench. I've already resized, trimmed, and tumbled all the .270 brass I have which is 150 cases. Just waiting for powder so I can actually load them.

Sounds like you need to get a (admin approved) group powder order going, probably from Higginsons. I'm all handgun for reloading so I'm out, but there are an awful lot of people taking up the hobby/sport on the Lower Island (if that's where you are) so you could be in luck.
