After searching and reading for what seems like months, I finally picked up what I think will be a good platform to use, learn and then build on.

Remingtom LSSF TH DM in 30.06:

Up to now I have been shooting my SR-22, CZ858 and JRC .40SW up to 100 yds with iron sight (CZ) and scopes on the other 2. Getting what I consider to be pretty good results with the SR22 and the CZ.
It seems that there's a good body of opinion that the Rem 700 action is good and can be used to build virtually anything.

I really liked the thumbhole stock as the other 700s I handled the grip was too small for my big meaty mitts. It's also got the Rem X adj trigger. I kinda felt with this stock / barrel / trigger combo I might keep it as is for a little while rather than just basically tearing it apart as soon as and replacing parts. I guess worst case if I don't like it, I can always sell it for something else.

Like the 24" medium, fluted stainless barrell, light, but the fluting should cool it I would hope.

Why 30.06 - I was going to go .308, but for that little extra few cents a round it'll have a little more power out to a little longer distances once I do my part. Hoping to get out Sunday to test it out :)

1 Question - I will but a better scope, but I have 2 available to me right now: Leupold 2-7X33 VXII and a Simmonds 4.5-18X40 Predator Quest. The current range goes out to 300 yds, and I'll start at 100, then 200 etc...

Which of these 2 scopes should I mount until I get around the buying a new one specifically for this rifle (and why)?

Any other comments appreciated

TIA

my first question would be, is this going to be a hunting or target shooting?

if its going to be a target only range gun, I would get a 308 but thats just me, because (short action, less powder, about the same velocity with 155 gr bullets, 308 is generally considered to be more accurate and more efficient)

if its a hunting gun then 30-06 is a little more versatile, you can get a wider range of bullet weights in factory ammo, 150s, 180s and 200s

as far as scopes go for 300 yards a 7 power will leave you wanting more, even with that 18 power you will need a nice big target, so your point of aim is consistent. I also don't know what the quality of that simmons us like, is it clear on max power?

everyone in the form will tell you to buy the best scope you can afford

just my 2 cents

Thanks for the comments.

I'm planning to use it as a mainly target, occasional hunting rifle. Right now the range I shoot at only goes to 300 Yds, so for the time being, I can work on technique and I'm thinking about re-loading as well.

I do plan to buy a new scope in the fullnes of time and expect to pay good money for it. The simmonds is really only just ok, I originally bought it for my JRC, and for now, I think that's where it's going to stay. I'll probably mount the Leupold for a few weeks until I buy somethng better. Only plan to start at 100 yds anyways, so 2-7 may be enough for now. If not, Ican always throw the Simmonds on. In the meantime, I can look into scope budget etc. Is $1K a reasonable budget for a decent scope?

So, went out to the range today to play a little for the first time with this gun. I decided to put the Leupold 2-7X33 scope for the time being as I do some research on what scope to but for it. Here's what it looks like with the Leupold - not exactly the "drainpipe" scope that many have, but it is a pretty clear scope (I'm also into photography, so I get the but good optics thing).

Ran about 10 rounds to get it close to zero's at 50 yds (I'm still a newb at zeroing scopes), then tried to practice a little. Here's the results (all at 50 yds off a bench rest but no stock rest or bag etc...)

I started zeroing from the bottom centre, then went bootm left top right then top left. Top left was 3 shots with a bit of concentration - tho it as -12C today and a nasty wind into my face, so I was pretty happy just to hit the paper at all as my fingers were getting kinda numb.

Ran some cheap Fusion .30-06 for the first 10 rounds then some Hornady "Custom" brand, both 150 grain. Overall, I'm pretty happy with today - ran a total of 26 rounds and even with the biting wind it was a lot of fun.
