New Remington 700 PC SB shorty - practicality of 10.5/12.5 barrel rifle

I finally got my 308 SBR built up and tested. Only at a short indoor range at about 40 yards or so. With the muzzle brake (The Heathen) forcing gases to both sides and in a small space the first round I shot was a little shocking as I had no idea what to expect. It is loud and if someone was right beside me it would likely not be comfortable. After about 20 rounds it felt great to shoot. As for accuracy, at 40 yards I could fairly consistently put Rounds through the same whole using a strike eagle 1-6. Unfortunately this is all I had to work with so dialed it in a inch high and hope to reach out farther soon.

What I like about this setup is super compact and with a magpul bipod mounted once your off the quad or vehicle you can get well set up quick and with the short barrel in the bush it will be super quick for target acquisition. Also it fits perfect in my Eberstock Secret weapon pack and you can load the pack with everything you need for a day hunt in the bush or on the quad etc. A real versatile and compact package. so far very pleased and it will suit my needs. Hoping the accuracy is still decent at 100 m.

Apparently manufacturers will make anything if it will sell ... why anyone would want this is beyond me ... this will probably end up on the schitt list too.

<LOL> ....... x2!

A plain old Model Seven with 20" 308 bbl would be a far better choice for handling, egos and longevity in your gun safe.

I'm continually amazed at how many judge without understanding.

As far as I am concerned these short barreled bolt action rifles are a very cool setup that have their place along with all of the other style of rifles I own..

I shot two deer at appr 100 yards and 140 yards in Nov 2020 with my 12.5" barreled Rem 700 PCR short rifle in 308 Win.

My opinion on the video above is they really haven't a clue.

Unless you need to use your hunting rifle indoor or with a 4 inch suppressor, a 12” rifle has no advantage over a 16” and longer barrel. (Even the M4 carbine has a 14” barrel...)

If you need a short handy rifle, 16 to 18” is about perfect.

I have a 16.5" barreled Ruger American Ranch in 450 bushmaster sits in a MDT LSS gen 2 chassis with their skeleton stock its barrel is 4" longer than my 12.5" barreled Rem 700 PCR short rifle in 308 Win

The 4" shorter barrel gives me a major handling advantage there is no way you will understand until you use one.

If that was directed toward me, I'm good with that. :) :)

You're right, I don't understand. Having used a short bbl carbine for years, I learned that for my uses, a 20" bbl is about right. Shorter than that doesn't handle well for me and the blast is a excessive. If that works for you, that is fine. No harm intended with my tastes vs yours. You are free to be wrong. :)

I started this thread, and while my lust for one of these died quickly, the picture still stirs me. It just has the perfect proportions. I really like the design of the hand guard. The MDT chassis on the other had stirs me in the way a savage axis does.

If the weight wasn't so heavy, I might've followed through. Muzzle blast was the second negative. I have not fired anything with a barrel this short and would certainly like to try one.

Load up date finally (yeah ok so I have been busy) on my 12.5" barreled Rem 700 PCR short rifle in 308 Win.

Finally had time to do some reloading for this little rifle.

I got onto the Hodgdon reloading site and looked up 15" pistol barrel loads for the 308 Win.

Using Todbartel's quickload info and their data I put together some IMR3031 with 125gr Ballistic Tips and Accubond loads.

First I finally checked the velocities of the factory ammo I had been using.

Winchester 150gr Powerpoints gave me a surprisingly low velocity of 2250fps

Remington 150gr CoreLoks gave me 2370fps I had been guessing they were giving me 2400fps

47grs IMR3031 which is one grain below max load with the 125gr bullets are giving me my goal velocity of 2700fps = 4 shots gave me 2699fps - 2720fps without any pressure signs.

What surprised me the first time I took a few shots with the 125gr reloads and 150gr at the same target at 100 yards was the Winchesters @ 2250fps were hitting 6" higher on the target than the 125gr loads now that I have finally chrono'ed the loads and see that there is a 460fps velocity difference I understand the major point of impact difference.

I've now put together a few more 125gr loads with 1/2gr more powder I get 2740fps with this load and still no pressure signs.

Next loads I want to test are I have some 165gr Partitions on the shelf thinking of working up a load with them for bear defense - larger game hunting.

Just checked the Hornady ballistic chart the 125gr Accubonds @ 2720fps with a 200 yard zero is 2" high at 100 yards 1.8" high at 150 yards, 9" low @ 300 yards and 25" low at 400 yards.

Not bad for a short 29" OAL rifle combo.

I went to order one there was two available I put one in cart but had to update my pal # to order which took 5 minutes and in that time both sold.unbelievable

Who wants a 12” barrel for a 308?? My idea of a very short 308 would be 16” barrel length minimum. 18” or 20” would be happy medium for handiness and velocity

I'm guessing the people that bought them don't mind loosing a few hundred feet per second of velocity and putting up with the muzzle blast and extra noise.... a guy could also swap out a longer barrel at some point and use this as a starting point for a semi custom build.

Your not alone thinking 16"- 20" is short enough for a hunting gun but hey it would be pretty boring if we were all clones thinking and liking the same things!

Latest up date

I am now getting 2740fps with my 125gr Accubond 48grs IMR3031 loads

I have them zeroed dead on to 1" high at 100 yards.

I have finally gotten around to loading 150gr Hornady SST's with a gradually worked up top load of 43.5grs IMR3031 I finally had a chance to shoot them beside my LabRadar 4 shots give me 2495fps - 2506fps at 100 yards the 150gr bullets are hitting 4" higher than the 125gr loads.

Scope on this set up is a Leupold compact 3-9x33mm with a long range reticle this shot is with the 125gr Accubond at 302 yards I held the first dot down on the bottom reticle post dead on the center of the pumpkin.

These next two shots were with the 150gr SST's @ 2500fps loads I held the main reticle dead on the center of the pumpkin

With trajectory and accuracy like this at 300 yards I'm now thinking I'm going to switch over to the 150gr SST's for all of my deer hunting.

Now to check out the Hornady Ballistic calculator then re-zero the scope for the 150's to hit 1 1/2" high at 100 yards.

Just checked Hornady's ballistic calculator with a 150 yard zero the 150gr SST's are 1.8" high at 100 yards and 1.5" low at 200 yards 300 yards is 12.5" low they are still doing appr 1900fps at 300 yards.

This little 308 Win with either the 125gr or 150gr bullets is definitely a 300 yard deer combo
