New Rifle for Africa

Not sure how readily available, but might be worth trying to find, or ordering:

Sako Kodiak in 338

Go for the Kimber! I've got a few kimber rifles now and I love them all. The 8400 will be about 8lbs scoped, still pleasant to carry. If you can get one in french walnut do it. I wouldn't turn a sako down either, but kimber's are a few hundred cheaper.

I wish I was going to africa:(, I'd take my kimber 300wsm, and maybe a new .416 ruger for the big stuff.;)

Stop buying Kimbers and you CAN go...:D

I am not sure what my pre-64 Win M70 in 338 weighs, but because of recoil, I would not want it any lighter. It is in a Bell & Carlson stock, so is about as light as that rifle could be. I think that stock reduces recoil.

I no longer hunt.

Sako 85 Hunter looks nice, but I've never seen one in person, that's gotta say something. I'd spring for a Ruger 77 Hawkeye in your case, the best deal going for your parameters, and the new LC6 trigger's excellent. It's got everything you've asked for.

I'd certainly want iron sights though... would hate to spend $30,000 on a hunting trip and then have a broken scope when you arrive. Or worse, break it in the field where there's zero chance of a replacement.

It's Africa...take a secondscope in QD rings, already zeroed. ;)

Best bargain in QD rings is the Ruger set up!:p

Ya, better idea for sure. The area we are going to is very open and close range shooting is most definitely not the rule. Open sights really wouldn't be a great back up option.

Yep, though it is very easy to turn a $10,000 PG hunt into $20,000. Add taxidermy, freight and airfare and it can be $30,000. Buffalo hunting can actually end up being cheaper. (Practice this in the mirror before presenting the idea to your wife.:D)

Or do Europeans and go back to Africa again...:D

Euros will save a lot of money, and a lot of wall space. Won't help with the freight much, and as memories they just aren't the same. It's a tough call. I've got a few Euros at home, and a whole crate in Joberg waiting for permits. One is a kudu that is one heck of a lot better than the one I shoulder mounted. That one I'm starting to regret, but the choice was made on whether I wanted more taxidermy, or to go back sooner. Another week, and another country later I went all head mounts. This year it was non-trophy bull elephant and bring home nothing but pictures and memories.
