Yikes!

If there are file marks there... What about inside the rest of the barrel?

Personally I'd take it back to the dealer and ask for a replacement.

I could be wrong but I highly doubt that a store will let you return it. especially if you picked it up in person and had the opportunity to inspect it before you bought it.

They look like chatter marks to me - and somebody on the line and somebody in QA/QC pooped the bed on that one.

If they are a decent store they will take it back. That is sloppy manufacturing and our suppliers (for the most part) will go to bat for us when required.

This is not necessarily something to get bent about - happens to everyone and today it happened to the guys at Savage and a Gun Nut. I will bet dollars to donuts you get a new rifle, the dealer will get reimbursed after a warranty evaluation and everybody walks away happy. If your dealer steps up don't just take it for granted. Make a point of thanking him here and that his good service is properly recognized.

That is unforgiveable IMHO, return it and get a Rem 700. It will most definately affect the accuracy of the rifle, even a small ding or chip at the crown will cause poor accuracy, that looks like somebody took a dremel to it. Very bad quality control, indeed. That and several other reasons is why you'll never see a Savage bolt in my rack.

hahaha That makes perfect sense. Our friends over at Remington have a fantastic track record with Quality Control :).

Savage will stand behind their product even if the retailer doesn't. I would expect the same from all reputable manufacturers although I can actually confirm that Savage will make it right. As for the retailer, I would expect them to take care of it for you, especially knowing that Savage would replace the rifle. That's how you turn a bad situation into a good one. Purchasing a rifle should be a memorable experience, but in a good way. People make mistakes, it's only human.

I'm glad you were able to notice it right away. I shoot with a guy that had a bull barrel remington that had similar problems. The rifle shot ok, but was horrible to clean. He had the barrel scoped and it was a complete mess inside. It was years after he bought it and didn't even try talking to Remington. He rebarreled it with a McGowen from Mystic and now she shoots better then any rifle I've ever seen first hand. I think it would be insteresting to buy a rifle at a shop where they have a bore scope and allow the customer to look at the bore before leaving with the rifle. Totally unreal, but a good idea anyways.

The Tikka is a good rifle too. Looks like Savage lost a customer based on poor Quality Control.

what the hec is wrong with American made guns these days? Marlins were dismally bad last few years (I haven't checked lately), Savage is slipping big time (mount holes drilled off center which I have proven empiracally by checking a few Savage rimfires at a local store). It seems Norinco is a pretty safe purchase these days. C'mon American manufacturers, you're doing it to yourlseves (and us) and doing the Chinese a big service. They're taking over because you are starting to suck!!

X2 You can end up with a flaw in any rifle getting pumped out in high numbers from automated factories. I have 9 newer savages from 17 HMR to 338 Lapua and all function perfectly and are very accurate. My next one will be in the new year in 6.5 ____? I looked at a brand new $ 1300 Kimber not so long ago that had a beautiful walnut stock that was warped bad enough that it had major pressure on the barrel. If you want a guarantee that there will be no flaws from factory...buy a Lazzeroni, Krieghoff, Merkel. Hoenig etc. And as much as I respect c-fmbi...I have to disagree with replacing it with a new Rem 700. Buy an older one maybe. But the new ones arent nothing like the old ones. Mine had a few issues ( rough chamber, firing pin hole big enough for 3 firing pins, accuracy, thin finish on action would form rust spots after coming in from the cold and letting thaw and dry ) But Deadmeat had almost identical rifle and it seemed alright. Goes to show you can end up with a dud in any of them.
