New Savage Rimfires for 2010!

At first I was very excited when I saw the stock until I saw what it was made from... A wood stock doesn't seem to justify the added price

I think I'll get a Mark 2 FV and just reinforce the synthetic stock myself. Eventually I would like to get an aftermarket stock when more companies start making them for this rifle

Boyd's are make there laminate stocks for Savage Web site is down right now

You know Savage is one of those companies that you just want to like, but every time you give them a chance, they screw it up.

The Classic model for example with the thumbhole stock. A very nice looking rimfire. I seriously considered one. However they couldn't be bothered to change the crappy/cheap mag system on the rifle, or least make it a single shot. Then there was the $600 price tag.

The tactical model would be great. I know a lot of people who would buy one as a trainer to mimick one of their .308 tactical rifles. But then they go and use a painted wood stock.

They've come a long way in the past couple of years. I'll give them a few more years to get their act together.

What is so wrong with painted wood?

I agree, I fail too see a problem...

-inexpensive(It's a savage, c'mon!:p)
-more rigid than tupperware
-easily bedded
-can be stripped and painted another colour or stained

I think I might just end up with one of these guys some time down the road.... I really like the looks of them.

I wholeheartedly agree. Not only would a black laminate be tough it would look fantastic too. Wow, did you see the price?! Ouch! For that kind of coin, I'd rather have a CZ452.

+1 for the CZ 452

If the Savage out shoots the CZ, would you still buy the CZ? Personally, I like accuracy and am not brand centric. Savage has always been a good bang for the buck rifle and once these have been through the wringer they may prove to be very accurate also. For me, it's too soon to pass judgment on them.

When the MRSP in US dollars for the Mark II TR – 22 LR is $469 I have a problem with painted wood. I'd rather pay more and get something that actualy is a scaled down tactical rifle. This would have been great. Heck I'd rather have a nice unpainted wood stock, aka Tikka master sporter idea, than painted black wood.

I don't make decisions based on "IF's". I already own one so I know what to expect. Like any other rimfire, you're going to find several brands/types of ammo that give you the best results. Accuracy isn't an issue here with me. Reliability and overal fit & finish is. For that money, a CZ452 is superior in all respects.

I agree with the CZ's being very nice rifles, but I never did like the long throw on the bolt. When I was shopping for a synthetic stocked 22lr I ended up going with a Sako Quad.

so its the same old Savage rimfire, but with a fluted barrel and tactical bling at premium prices? meh.
no offense to Savage rimfire owners - they make a great <$200 rimfire - but the action is very toy-like. not sure id want to pay over $500 for one.
what id give for something like a 700P scaled down to rimfire sizes but keeping everything else the same. i guess the Ruger 77/22 is the only candidate - or a CZ.
id love something like this from the factory (but skip the sewer green gunkote and make it target gray stainless) thats built on a proper all-steel scaled-down centerfire action.

^custom 77/22

Even Ruger has noticed there's a market. here's their new target tactical. $550 US MSRP. I would love a scaled down quality tactical bolt action. A Falcon 4-14x (Already use these on semi auto rimfires) and let the fun begin.

obviously we cant have one with the integral suppressor: i was just posting it because of the fact that its an actual scaled down, proper bolt action in a type of configuration id like.

i guess i need to add a 77/22 to my list of purchases for 2010. i am still kicking myself for not buying one when they were on clearance at LeBaron for ~$450. theyre $800-900 now

I had heard over the interweb that Boyds might actually be offering the stock from the new Mark II TR on their website sometime in April or May. Well I sent an email to Boyds today to see if there was any truth to this rumor and this was my answer. "There may have been some talk about producing it, but we have not been informed of anything yet."

So while this doesn't say yes they are making it, it definitely does not say they are not considering it. I think it would be a fantastic idea to start producing some Savage stocks as the are fairly popular now and there is next to no aftermarket support. I was hoping for the rumors to be true but even if they do decide on making the stock, I dont think it will be ready any time in the near future. Maybe I'll just sell the Mark II i bought last june and buy the new TR.
