After 40+ years of deer hunting in Ontario, primarily in the Muskoka & Parry Sound regions, my recommendations is for a variable powered scope of 1x-4x or
1.5x-5x ... and certainly not more than 2x-7x. Hunt with it on the lowest power setting ... if you get a chance at something more distant than the usual 50-60
yard shot you will almost always have more than enough time to select a higher power. The field of view at 1x is of significant help if you are shooting in the bush
at the typical closer distances often encountered in the bush, particularly so on moving game.
I have Leupold VXII's on 4 of my deer rifles ... 3 in 1x-4x 20 and 1 in 2x-7x 28. I have tried 3x-9x's, 4x-12x's, 4x and 6x fixed power scopes and even used a 6x-18x
a couple of times on a long "field watch". The 1x- 4x are by far my favourites. Small, compact, light and very sleek ... nothing much to catch on brush. I mount them
as low as possible. ( And would NEVER for a New York minute consider a "see-thru" mount ). Flip-up lens covers (like Butler Creeks) work well for rainy/snowy days.
Pick your brand & price point ... but opt for lower rather than higher magnification ! 3x-9x's, IMHO, are perhaps well-suited for hunting western Canada, but are,
at least o me, are a bit of a handicap in the bush of central Ontario. The huge field of view of a good quality scope set at 1x or 1.5x trumps that of a 3x glass any day.
