Hi,
I am getting my firearms license and would like to go hunting and take up the sport of target shooting. I am inheriting a .303 British and .22 target rifle. I would like to hunt whitetail, elk, and maybe moose. I would like to buy a rifle for less than $1000 preferably in .30-06 or something close to that calibre. Any suggestions would be nice.
Thanks,
Chris
Your 303 would be a great gun to start hunting with, if it is in good shape. When you are looking for a new hunting rifle, you need to evaluate your needs before making a choice:
- How far will you be shooting?
100yrds or less
100yrds to 200 yrds
200 yrds or more?
This, with your type of game, will determine wich type of caliber you need and if you decide to put a scope on it (and it's magnification)
-You also need to now what kind of action you want: lever, pump, bolt. brake open or semi-auto.
-What kind of magasine do you want: fixed, removable or tubular
-Do you want a wood or synthetic stock ?
-Do you want a blued or a stainless barrel ?
Here are a few examples in your price range (with out scopes and rings):
- Remington 7600 (pump action)
- Browning BLR (lever action)
-Tikka t3 hunter, remington mod. 700, weatherby vanguard, steven's 200(bolt action)
For a good starter hunting rifle (best bang 4 your $) check out the Savage 111fcxp3 (
www.savagearms.com ) It's a bolt action available in 30 06, with a detacheble mag and a mounted scope that is included for a total of 411$
Happy shopping
